Should we go to Mae Hong Sorn or Chiang Rai? Going in 2 weeks...

We're planning a 2 week trip to Thailand, and will be in Chiang Mai for 6 nights. During this time, we'd like to see some of northern Thailand, including hill tribes; however, we have already made hotel reservations in Chiang Mai, and don't want to stay overnight up north. Is it worth flying to Mae Hong Sorn for the day? We have 2 days booked with Poon (Ratt's sister) in Chiang Mai. Would she fly with us (we'd prefer to avoid the long drive given it's for 1 day)? What about a car when there? Please advise - we're leaving in 2 weeks. Your advice is most appreciated!

i think it would be way too rushed to fly up for a day...maybe for an overnite, but not one day....

I agree, I think it makes no sense to fly. Since you'll have Poon, have her drive you to various places, you don't have to go as far as Mae Hong Son to see interesting things.

Definitely don't fly to MHS or drive there. Not enough time. Poon can take you to many other closer places like Doi Mae Salong or even chiang Rai or other places.

Please say hello to her from Gloria and tell her I'm looking forward to seeing her again in February.

Thanks for your responses, which are very helpful. If we want to see hilltribes, where specifically should we ask Poon to take us?

try to go to ones that the bus tours don't go to as they will be the least touristy. She should know. Ones further away from chiang mai will be a bit more authentic -- perhaps villages around Doi Mae Salong. If you want to visit an incredible place which is an orphanage/school you could go to School for Life. Poon took me there so she knows how to get there.

Poon is a driver in the CM area. She is sister to Ratt, a driver in Bangkok.

Does Poon give tours to Chiang Rai and the Golden triangle? Also does she do hilltribe trekking with elephant rides, bamboo rafting and sleeping at a hilltribe?

Poon is a driver, not a guide.

You need to hire a guide for that kind of a trip.
