Should I reserve Intercity trains in advance?

We will be visiting Japan at the end of this month (Hope the weather cools down), and will be traveling between Tokyo-Kyoto-Kanazawa-Tokyo, traveling by bullit train when available and maybe Green train cars.
Is it better to reserve now, in advance, or wait until we are in Japan, or wait until we are in the train station?

We usually book Euopean trains in advance, but not familiar with Japan.

Thanks!

* Just book them when you get here. However, I booked my Tokyo-Kyoto-Tokyo, Nozomi Shinkansen Green car ticket in advance only to save time. But, yesterday the Green Car, from Kyoto to Tokyo, wasn't full. But, the non-Green Cars were quite full and there were certain Shinkansen trains that were sold out as I was standing in line, to ask a question, at the Kyoto Station yesterday and noticed the train schedule board that shows which trains are sold out and which ones have available seats. But, in the Green Car, there shouldn't be a problem getting a seat.

* As for the weather, it isn't that hot now. I've been in Japan since July 26th and a few days ago, in Kyoto, the weather temperature went down. I was just in Kyoto for 10 nights and am now back in Tokyo again and when I arrived yesterday at around 4:30PM, it was cool and windy here. The FS staff member who greeted me at the Shinkansen train yesterday, said that it had gotten really cool in Tokyo since the typhoon had hit.

Happy Travels!
