Shopping?

What have you purchased in Singapore that you thought was a "good" deal/bargain compared to purchasing it in the US? Thanks.

Singapore really doesn't offer much in the way of great deals.

The only thing I saw that was a steal was a pashmina shawl. It was about $120US and goes for at least triple here in the States.

Everything else was about the same or only slightly cheaper.

If you really want to go shopping, you need to get to Bangkok and Hong Kong.

Lynn

:-)

I've purchased Persian rugs there at a very good price and Chinese antiques. The quality of their tailoring for custom-made clothing is uniformly higher than either Bangkok or Hong Kong, in my experience, so it is worth paying a bit more.

For gems and jewelry, I'd recommend Bangkok.

I haven't been back to Hong Kong since it was turned over to the Chinese, so I'm not sure what the best bargains there are now.

Thanks guys! I'm really interested in electronics e.g., digital camera. I appreciate the help!

electronics can be a "good deal"-better than Hong Kong. Ask most cab drivers where the duty free shopping plazas are - stay off of Orchard Road and you'll be OK. If you know the price at home ,you'll see the difference. The duty free at Changi airport is huge and a good spot to" warm up" before you hit the duty free malls. I've forgotten their names, but there are a few and the drivers all have their fav!
Hi Liz, we were there last month and I found Mustafa's was a great place to shop. I found beautiful silk wraps for about AUD 30- (only USD 15-)and only wish I'd bought some for gifts this Christmas. Over there they sell gold by weight. CDs & DVDs were also cheaper than here. I think the days of Singapore being a bargain hunters paradise, epecially for electronics has gone. However, we noticed that the prices were still better than here in Aust. The only problem with buying electronic items over there is claiming on the warranty from another country.
