Shikoku and Iya Valley

Following a suggestion I got from a previous message, I am going to spend 3 days (2 or 3 nights)on the Shikoku island. Due to problems related to italian driving licence not valid in Japan we will be not able to rent a car.
I would like to visit Iya valley and other places moving with public transports from Takamatsu: is it a problem? We can stay overnight in the town and do daytrips or we have to change location? We will arrive from Okayama and at the end of our stay in Shikoku we have to move to Tokyo (always using our JR pass).

Please give me any input.

Grazie, ciao.

Are you sure about your license? I did a bit of searching and found that you should be able to drive in Japan with an international driver's license...BUT, some countries issue a sort of international license that is not valid in Japan...BUT Italy was not on the list that I found. It looks like if you get an international driver's license you can drive...and even if you are from one of the countries from where the international license isn't accepted, you can get a Japanese translation of your home country's license from JAF (Japanese Auto Federation, like AAA in America) and that is OK to drive with for up to a year.

Italy is on the list of acceptable countries. You can drive with an international license from Italy no problem.

I have not been to Iya Valley; it soudns lovely. From the link below, it sounds like the nearest JR station is Oboke, then you have to bus to the rest of the valley, and buses are infrequent. BUs timetable link is in the site below, but it is only in Japanese.

AS I recall, you are going to Naoshima as a day trip, right? If not, I'd definitely go there for the Benessee Art.

Also, Kotohira (click on Kompirasan and Kanamazura on this page):

And Kochi:

You are searching this site for Shikoku info too, right? Click on Shikoku on left side and it drops down to all destinations in Shikoku, and there is more sub-menu under each of those. Also, the links on the right are very good.

Most importantly, go to the page below, and click on the "pdf Shikoku" on right side towards bottom. This is an excellent pdf document, in depth on Shikoku. Best I have seen.
