Shanghai ideas?

I am in Downtown Shanghai for a week in mid July. Some work; some play. What are must sees/dos?

The Shanghai Museum is fabulous. They have the most amazing collection of antique seals used for signatures. The coins and costumes collections too, are wonderful. There is a very good giftshop inside the museum where we picked up lots of souvenirs for family & friends. Walk down Nanjing Road from the museum and stop at the "hole in the wall" laneway displays with copy cat wallets & scarves. LV, Gucci, Prada. My wallet looks identical to the original $600 one. I paid yuan 70 about AUD14. Hermes scarves for AUD3. What a city. There's also Huating Market for brilliant dvd's & fakes. Check them for quality. Shopping is better than Hong Kong imho. Drinks at Grand Hyatt Cloud 9 bar on level 87-my favourite hotel in the world. Have a great time in one of the world's most exciting cities!!!

I agree that Shanghai Museum is great. There is huge collection but well organised, with English description too. You could easily spent half day or full day there.

Also, if you have time, go to the Bund in the early morning AND at night. It's totally different environment there. In the morning, lots of locals doing exercise or playing tai chee, while the neon lights are turned on at night (as shown in the typical postcard).

I second Lyndie's recommendations absolutely-esp. the Shanghai Museum-it is a beautiful museum that is a must-see while in Shanghai. And as for the Hyatt, I really wanted to go there and check it out-esp. the Cloud 9 bar on the 87th floor- but did not have the time- now that Lyndie has pronounced it fabulous, I see what I've missed-so I would put that on the must-do list for Shanghai as well! Also, a river cruise at night to see the skyline of Shanghai, including the Bund, lit up at night. I've never seen anything like it-it was like a combination of Times Square in New York and Las Vegas-a highlight of my trip there.

Airlawgirl- There we were, sitting in our fab room in the Grand Hyatt on level 77 overlooking the Bund, sipping take-away wine from an off-Nanjing deli, indulging in some of the best quality and well-priced room service food I've ever eaten (sushi to die for), looking out at the river and the city lights, the Pearl Tower and the boats. Then private elevator to level 87 and our table with a better view (if that is possible) than our room. OK, US12 for my cocktail was a bit much but I plan on continuing to experience things I will never forget and this was one night I will never forget!!The Grand Hyatt staff were so cool-we arrived at 11 am from Sofitel in Nanjing St and they checked us in early, upgraded us & treated us like we were royalty from an oil-rich state. Never have we experienced service such as at this hotel. Spend the money!

Gee, Lyndie- I WISH you hadn't told me that- I KNEW just looking up at that hotel, and being told about that Cloud 9 bar on the 87th floor, that I should have been there! WHAT a fab experience! Well, we know where to go now, don't we? You and I seem to have very similar tastes!
