We're just home from Asia, and loved, loved, loved Shanghai. Thanks for all your posts and insights. Hope you all have a fun get together!

Shanghainese Apr 29th, 2013 07:50 PM

Leburta: You are most welcome, glad you loved my birthplace. Wish you could join us at the GTG.

Leburta Apr 30th, 2013 04:45 AM

Perhaps next year, if you do it again. We're already planning a return trip next spring.

rhkkmk Apr 30th, 2013 05:32 AM

oh, how i wish we could be there!!!

hello from umbria, italy

Shanghainese May 1st, 2013 11:01 AM

Leburta: I go every year and try to do a GTG; not sure about next year, been there 2 consecutive springs, could do fall in 2014. You can organize a GTG too, where did you go aside of Shanghai?

rhkkmk: You are just trying to make us envious, right?

Leburta May 2nd, 2013 02:38 PM

Unfortunately, we were only there four days, so we didn't go outside the city.

Next time, I'd like to go to Suzhou, not only to see an ancient water town, but also to see I. M. Pei's museum. I saw a short documentary about it, and wondered why there is no mention of it in descriptions of the city and tourist publications. Is this the same Suzhou?

I am also the consummate tourist, and would like to see the zoo and aquarium. I want to see more of Shanghai at night, and want to shop more. I want to try more of the wonderful restaurants I've read about.

I just can't wait to go back!

Not me but plenty of people think 2 days in Shanghai proper is enough, hope you saw a lot in your 4 days. You didn't miss anything at the City Zoo, I recommend the Wild Animals Park, it's not close to city center but well worth the travel time. The aquarium is easy to get to, only go if you have extra time, can't compare to the Monterey Aquarium in northern California or the Maui Ocean Center. Are you in HI?

You didn't even get to Suzhou? It is not a watertown, it is a nice size city famous for its gardens, a 40-minute bus or cab ride will get you to the watertown Tongli. As to Mr Pei's museum, as much as the chinese love its native son, somehow they were not excited about the design, perhaps too traditional?

The Bund area is delightful at night, all lit up. Shopping is not as fun as it used to be, too much fake stuff and the prices of everything is jumping up and up, real estate in Shanghai has topped US cities.

I guess I'll be considered a non-Fodorite here. I'll be travelling solo to Beijing and Shanghai soon, staying primarily in Shanghai with family (elderly grandparents). Can I ask for details about this GTG?

Shanghainese May 9th, 2013 01:50 PM

Welcome, FallenSnow:!

Now you have posted (vs. just reading), you ARE a Fodorite. Could you be more specific about details you'd like know? The purpose is to meet friends and newbies, chat about travel experiences and other topics; the cost of the meal is split between the attendees not including the drinks, each perosn pays for their own drinks.
