Several Shanghai Q's

We are going to Shanghai and beyond in mid-March for 2 weeks, from Australia. A few questions:

Can anyone recommend a nice clean, not expensive locally-owned hotel in the French Concession?

To tour the canal towns, we thought it might be better to base ourselves in Suzhou and take day trips out to Nanxun and Tongli, the two we want to see. Good idea or is there a better way?

We want to see Mt Huangshan on this trip. Our plan is to get an overnight train from (near to the canal towns we are seeing) Hangzhou to the city nearest the national park (Tungli?) and then work our way up to the park, no easy feat, the books tell me. Suggestions on how to book the train and even find out if there is one? We will try seat61.com/China.htm but I am not optimistic about finding much. We also may fly straight back from Tungli to Shanghai. Can it be done?

Any other suggestions about these destinations will be gratefully received.
