Seoul-nightlife & costs?
 

I'm planning a trip to Seoul. Can anyone tell me about the nightlife? Also is it expensive? I've been in Tokyo before and that city was very expensive.

Dear Carlos, I was in Seoul the summer of 98' and found Seoul not only a beautiful and incredibly friendly city but very inexspensive. I think it's probably more exspensive now because the economy may have recovered a little but it's definitly cheaper than Tokyo. Just keep track of how much you spend because its easy to get on a good exchange rate high and then wish you had enought left to buy some of the beautiful art work or amethysts. <BR>In regards to nightlife I saw a lot of theater and went to a lot cafes to sample various desserts. All of it was very reasonable and really fun. Don't miss the traditional korean music show which features 5 incredible drummers.If you're interested in specifics I still have all my tickets etc. just email me at [email protected]

Hi, <BR>I lived in Seoul for about two years and took full advantage of the nightlife. I'tawan is a hot spot for many foreigners living in South Korea. There are also some great all night shopping markets with superb buys!

i think this reply will be way too late for the author, but i hope this can be of some help to those who visit this forum for some info on the subject. <BR> <BR>nightlife in seoul is basically not so different from that in other major cities in the world, for example, tokyo, hong kong, and even new york city. there are lots of cafes and bars in downtown seoul, and also some clubs and karaoke bars are available. <BR> <BR>even though it might depend on how you want to spend a night, 20 to 30 dollars in your pocket will be just enough for the ordinary drinks and dances you can enjoy. naturally, if you have any local friends, that will be great.

i was last in seoul in 97, so my info might be way outdated. but... from my experience, itaewon was horrible. it was dirty, tacky and trashy. (it is the area where the u.s. military base is located. i will not expound here on the local social consequences of western military bases in asia) i did not feel safe there at all and would never go again late at night. the college town areas (e.g., yondae, hongdae) were much better - note that it is mostly a college-aged crowd. another good place is the kangnam area (south of the river), accessible via the green line on the subway. i found that clubs that were in hotels were much cleaner and more tasteful. the names of these clubs are always changing... <BR><BR>one of my most favorite things to do at night in seoul was going to one of those traditional pub-like places (log wood walls and rice paper windows, etc) and drink korean native liquor (i.e., soju, dong-dong-ju), munching on hot appetizers. yum...
