Seatbelts in China?

A silly question from a paranoid mother with 3 kids going to China.

Do taxis, tour vans, etc. tend to have seatbelts in them in China?

I'm not even going to worry about booster seats, but I'd like the kids to be belted in while we're touring. Is this unrealistic?

Yes, it's a bit unrealistic. 99% of taxis will not have seatbelts. Some tour vans might, but it's doubtful.

Hi Linda,

None of the taxis we took during our stay in Beijing had seatbelts.

But to our great amusement, they had a short grey strap, complete with buckle, sewn crosswise across the upholstery, as a sort of decoration accessory.

The front passenger seat in the VW taxis in Shanghai do have a seatbelt available but that probably doesn't help you much with children.

One time I had a super scary taxi ride to Shanghai's Pudong airport. He was racing along the highway and I was freaked. I was in the back seat and reached behind to pull the seatbelt out. (It's behind the seat as they put those white seat covers on so one has a clean place to sit). Anyway I pulled it out, strapped it on and got black stuff all over my shirt!

You will not be able to count on seatbelts, unless you are hiring a car yourself and demand it.

Some consolation: In the cities, traffic moves much slower than you are probably accustomed to in North America, so all the near misses as your driver weaves though traffic at 5-10mph are not quite as frightening.
