Search engine results

I have been getting really fed up with getting irrelevant and useless search results these days, anyone know any new search engines with decent results?

stjohnbound Feb 7th, 2005 05:05 AM

What search engines do you use? I always Google and get great results.

JamesA Feb 7th, 2005 05:43 AM

I used to use Google but tend now more towards Yahoo, we tend to use local sites more and more for information in Asia.

rhkkmk Feb 7th, 2005 06:12 AM

i'm starting to use google more all the time and have traditionally used yahoo....google is the giggest so i read at the moment...

you have to learn how to out smart the site to get some info more clearly and quickly....

I use Google and usually have no problems. I think it's more about the search terms you choose than the search engines.

I usually find Google as good as anyone, but occasionally surfwax (which I think may be the same as yahoo) is easier to read. Anyway, here's a dozen for you to try: http://new.donnegan.com/Useful_Links.html

Yes I agree, you have to be precise in what you are looking for, I learnt you have to put " before and after your search term if you want to really narrow does the results. ( e.g " 12345" )

I've also just started using Ansearch.com which is Australian, you have to click the button to get 'web' searches otherwise it restricts to Australian sites, trying it for Thailand searches it was quite good.

Just wondered if in the U.S there was news of any new ones coming on the scene.

yahoo uses Google, same thing

I tend too use www.dogpile.com when I need too find a more dificult search.. ask jeeves is also prity good when trying too find sites that give spacific anwers too a question..

other search engines are ithaki. overture. and metacrawler.

Some of these sites. search other search engines too get the supposed best links.

Another technique with Yahoo, Google, et al. is to utilize the plus sign (+). For example, Thailand hotels might yield one set of results whereas hotels + Thailand will yield a different set.

Spygirl Feb 7th, 2005 10:25 PM

Absolutely right. Yahoo does uses Google, therefore, there's no reason to specifically go to Google to do a search. Yahoo also corrects spelling, and attempts to discern what you mean if a term or phrase is not correctly entered. I believe I get a more comprehensive search result with Yahoo as a result.

JamesA Feb 7th, 2005 11:01 PM

Sorry guys, don't jump on me but Yahoo stopped using Google at least 6 months back, the results are vastly different, true, Yahoo 'did' use Google but that stopped ages ago. I took a look at the so called 'new' MSN seach but it was in my opinion a waste.

Dogpile was not bad at all, takes results from various places, I'll try that tip for using the '+' sign.

Spygirl Feb 7th, 2005 11:20 PM

James-I don't know a lot about these matters, but I do know that Yahoo made a concerted effort a couple of years ago to not only buy up search engines, but to control the technology that goes into producing the editorial search results, in order to overtake Google in the search engine wars. To that end, it has acquired such technology in order to accomplish its goal.

Razzle_Dazzle Feb 8th, 2005 03:56 AM

I started using the Yahoo! search engine ever since I started using the Internet, and as they say, old habits die hard.

Just like Orgy7 said, Yahoo uses Google, so there is really no need to use Google for the best search results; Yahoo is just as effective.

Kathie Feb 8th, 2005 06:59 AM

As of last week anyway, Yahoo does not use Google. Msn used to use Yahoo, but as of last week has launched their own search engine. The moral of the story is that this changes with some frequency.

orgy7 Feb 8th, 2005 09:27 AM

yep I am wrong again.. nothing new.

http://searchenginewatch.com/reports...le.php/2156401

seems like good site too find out how each search engine work and gives tips too get best search results.

Kathie Feb 8th, 2005 11:34 AM

orgy, the chart shown in that article is over six months old, so while it gives a snapshot of the search engines for July, 2004, it doesn't tell us which search engine is being used by various websites now.

JamesA Feb 8th, 2005 06:35 PM

The 'biggy' that I have learnt is putting the " before and after the search query. What it does is search for that exact term, otherwise if you put in say 4 words it searches for all those words. As others have said you need to search deep down often.

Searchenginewatch was interesting!

Happy New year Everyone !

Hope these would help.

Clusty:

JamesA Feb 9th, 2005 12:50 AM

Yup, Clusty.com came up good with good and relevant results, both those take the results from a lot of different search engines and then sort out the best, so far doing some random ones the results are very very good.

JamesA Feb 22nd, 2005 12:59 AM

I am always putting the "" ( " before and then after the query words ) and getting much better results otherwise all the words are searched for individually. I am also sticking with Yahoo now. In all cases though you find decent answers hundred of results down, never pressume that what you find on the first few pages is the best answer!
