Sarawak - Miri, and Rainforest Lodge advice needed

W a week in Malaysia and Borneo and plan to fly to Kota Kinabalu, flying out of Kuching after attending a wedding. I am torn as to whether to spend 3 days at the Rainforest Lodge in the Danum Valley as it takes almost a full day to get out there. Is it worth it, or can we see the same wildlife near Kuching?

If we go to the Rainforest Lodge, we still have 2 extra days and I am not sure where to spend them. Is Miri worth 2 days? We have seen caves all over the US. Any other suggestions for places to see? We plan to spend 3 days in Kuching.

I went to Miri and the Niah Caves about 10 years ago so my memory of logistics is a little hazy, but the caves were a spectacular experience.

The starting point is about a two hour drive from Miri, then it's about an hour's walk on a timber walkway through beautiful rain forest to the caves. The caves themselves are well maintained and lighted with excellent guides.

We always planned to return and spend the night near the caves to see the sunset "changing of the guard" when the swallows return home and the bats fly out, but haven't made it back yet.

Miri was at the time a non-event. It might have improved.

Kuching town is pleasant. From there we did a one day river trip to visit a long house. Haven't been to Rain Forest Lodge so can't compare. Again, always planned to go back for a more extensive visit.

You might also look at the Mulu caves. Haven't been there either but they're supposed to be fascinating.

I agree with marmot re Miri, the caves are interesting but there is nothing special about the town itself.

Mulu is definitely worth considering, the caves are spectacular particularly at sunset when the bats come out. There is also jungle trekking and boat trips on the river. Quite shocking as you fly there to see the devastation of the rainforest caused by the logging. If you are into heavy duty trekking you could consider The Pinnacles - spectacular karst formations deep in the forest. Even more out of the way are the Kelabit highlands which are incredible but only reachable by light plane - certainly the most remote place I have ever been to but definitely worth the trouble

The Borneo Rainforest Lodge is an incredible experience. You are staying in the primary rainforest, with the opportunity to see all kinds of wildlife - in the wild. There is nowhere near Kuching (or really, anywhere in Sarawak) where you can have the same kind of experience. We felt the BRL was worth both the time and expense.
