we did not find much to do on samui...it is a great place to to sit back and relax....get a place that has a nice pool and make the most of it...in some areas the ocean is better than in other areas...we were at bophut beach and the ocean was beautiful to look at but we did not enjoy going into it...the peace resort is very nice and i would stay there another time...

I agree with rhkkmk ? Samui is a beautiful place to relax but not a lot of activites.
There are a few nice shops at the south end of Chaweng, including a Jim Thompson store and a place that carries products from the Artisans of Angkor. However, most shops are the typical cheap souvenir stands or swimwear stores.
If you like massages, many of the inexpensive places on the main strip actually give very good massages ? no ambiance but dirt cheap. There are also quite a few luxurious spas which are still cheap by western standards.
If you like going out, there is no shortage or bars or nightlife in Chaweng.
I stayed at the Central Samui Beach Resort which is on Chaweng but removed from the main strip. The gardens and grounds are absolutely lovely and the rooms are extremely comfortable. It is near everything but at the same time very quiet and peaceful. It is, however, a large hotel and not suited for someone looking for something small and quaint.
I think the hotel is on the nicest strip of beach in Samui. Lovely fine, white sand that continues into the water for a long ways. No rocks, coral, seaweed, garbage, etc. No big waves and definitely swimmable. Also, no hawkers, massage stands, etc. are allowed on the strip of beach right in front of the hotel. If you walk towards the main part of Chaweng, the quality of the beach and sand definitely deteriorates. Not as cheap as other places but worth it if you want a peaceful, relaxing stay with nicer amenities. I found the best prices by booking with the hotel directly: www.centralhotelsresorts.com/csbr_default.asp
