SALAY from BAGAN

Leaving for Burma in four weeks. Is a side trip to Salay wroth the effort?

Pictures looks amazing.

How do I get there form Old Bagan? How much from Old Bagan?

You would need a car and driver from Bagan. How many days are you spending in Bagan? If you are there more than 4 days, then it might make sense to go there - otherwise, I'd say no. There are some lovely old wooden monasteries in the Bagan area. I'd' only go to Salay if I had lots of extra time.

Sorry, I can't quote you a price, but any taxi driver in Bagan can.

PS have you looked at our Burma photos? Two trips, 2009 and 2011

Kathie, I am a temple junkie so I am in Bagan for 7.5 days. I think it would be a great "humpday" diversion along with Popa.
It looks marvelous.

I loved your photo report. Ava looks magnificent. Ah, to have a month.

PS: Love the old cars too. like Havana!

Great! Another temple junkie! Yes, then I would go to Salay. We used a horsecart driver while we were in Bagan who had a real depth of knowledge about the temples. He is probably officially a guide by now. His brother is a driver and has taken a number of people to Mt. Popa and/or Salay. You can contact him at [email protected]

Are you going to be able to go to Mrauk U?

Since you are a temple junkie, let me add that the places we saw near Inle were fascinating - unique Buddhist iconography I've seen no where else in my extensive travels to Buddhist areas.

Salay is well worth a visit IMO. Beautiful crumbling colonial buildings, an interesting and huge teak monastery, and a large Buddha statue that was apparently dislodged upstream, retrieved by the locals from the Ayerwaddy, and ensconced in it's own purpose built pavilion.
We travelled by river, so can't help with travel times/costs.
It's one of the less visited towns, so interaction with the locals was pure gold.
