Ryokan and hotel advice pls

We are tossing up between Gora Kaden Ryokan in Hakone near Mt Fuji and Iwaso on isle of Miyajima. We want the best - have 10 yr old girl with us. Also, suggestions on place to stay for 4-5 nights in Kyoto. The best please, probably western. thanks

Miyajima might be more "special." 10 yr old is no problem at all...just inform your ryokan when you make the reservation...they will give you a child-sized yukata for her and ask you if you want a children's dinner or a regular dinner for her...kid's dinner is usually something like rice in tomato sauce/ketchup wrapped in a soft omelet with various sides like fried shrimp and small hot dogs...my daughter LOVES kids meals but most non-Japanese kids might find them a bit strange...be sure to ask what the child meal consists of before ordering it to be sure your child will eat it. We've never had a problem staying anywhere with our now-7-yr old daughter...always welcome, always special, always happy.

Miyajima is really special to me,..no cars or trucks, no traffic. Peaceful forest hikes, lovely temple, deer that eat from your hand, delicious maple leaf shaped cakes.

Kyoto...best for what? There is SOOOOOOO much to see, and no place is "central." Granvia is in the station, so very convenient. Many other hotels are near the station, as well as others being just lovely. There are many, many western hotles...actually, most are western style with beds. I'd just go ahead and pick what suits your style and budget best. Kids are welcome just about everywhere.

Kyoto is very big and spread out, so no matter where you stay, you won't be able to walk everywhere you want to go.

iwaso is a lovely ryokan and the food is absolutely divine. i think for a child, iwaso is much more appropriate - there are lots of outdoor activities to partake in on the island, a tram that rides up to the top of the island's peak, lots of hidden temples to discover, shops, a beach, etc. it is an adorable place. Gora will be a little too stuffy i think, although probably more aesthetically pleasing and definitely more expensive.

in kyoto, not even a question - you have to stay in the westin miyake hotel. i stayed in the granvia and moved to the westin because my hotel room smelled like smoke and had a fairly depressing ambiance. the westin is beautiful, service impeccable and the facilities are great for children: large wreck room, wonderful pool, etc.

I hope they have a "rec" room, but maybe with all the kids, it is a wreck.. :-) (so sorry, couldn't resist!!)

We stayed at the Iwaso and it was amazing! I definitely recommend it.

The very best ryokan in Kyoto is Hiiragiya. I stayed there with my children and it was amazing!!
