Royal Angkor Hotel vs. FCC Angkor???

I posted these questions in response to my thread about the Passaggio Boutique Hotel but I figured that I might get more responses by starting a new one. In the original post, I stated that we had found a room at the Passaggio for $104 total for 3 nights. I'm wondering if we should just pay a little more. It did seem a little too good to be true. Our original budget for this trip was an average of $100/nt over 30 days and I was just attracted to the significantly lower rate at the Passaggio. A lot of the hotels that people on this board really like are significantly more expensive. My boyfriend really wants to stay at the Royal Angkor Resort for $95/nt. Any opinions on this hotel? I know it is not in town, but it seems to be easily accessible and there are very positive reviews on Trip Advisor. We also like the FCC Angkor which is $100/nt and I know people on this board have had positive experiences there, too. It has A/C in the rooms, correct? I like that the FCC is in town, do people consider this necessary/highly desireable? The pool definitely looks much smaller than the one at the Royal Angkor. We definitely want a place with a pool, a gym would be another plus. Thanks for your opinions!

there is no need to be in town as getting around is so easy....but i think you would really want a/c....its very hot all the time in SR...you will be outside all day and having a cooler place to come back to is well worth the extra $$

either of those hotels is good....remember there is going to be a service/tax added on however, unless you are booking on asiarooms.com or one of the other discount sites....make sure you get breakfast as well and then you are really saving...

Lynda and I stayed at The Royal Angkor a number of years ago. A beautiful hotel. Although fairly large it always felt very quiet and peaceful. The free form pool at Royal Angkor is fabulous. There are also a number of eating options within the the hotel. Lovely grounds too. We booked a de-luxe room which really was quite luxurious. Fabulous bathroom with huge shower that had multiple spray heads. And a separate tub too.
Yes, we loved The Royal Angkor.

Another place that gets mentioned here a lot is the Bopha Angkor. I've stayed there myself, and it is quite nice, with a good location. Get one of the more expensive rooms (poolside deluxe) & you might be quite happy.

We stayed at the FCC a number of years ago. The pool is quite small (I would guess at 15m long) and seemed very cold. The rooms were nice and certainly had a/c and were of a minamalist/modernist design, sort of an Aman replica (which is not too far away). My main concern was that we were in a pool side room which did not afford much privacy as the wall overlooking the pools was entirely glass but I guess the 2nd floor rooms would be better in that respect.

The restaurant served very good, if expensive, fusion type food and the whole place is generally very trendy with an art gallery next door. It seemed a bit of an expat hangout.

Personally, I preferred being in town as I would much prefer to walk around deciding upon which restaurant to choose (there is a great Korean barbeque typr place quite close by) but as bob has pointed out travel around town, is relatively hassle free.

There are now so many hotels in SR that I would not know how to choose. Not sure what teh rates are but we did pop in to the Victoria Angkor which had a very nice pool and seemed like a great hotel.

We stayed at the Victoria a couple of years ago, and the pool is indeed excellent...big, salt water, not cold, lots of chairs, food and drinks served poolside. We really enjoyed their bar, too...quiet, comfortable, relaxing, friendly. They have a stay 3 pay 2 and stay 4 pay 3 deal now that is good through Mittapheap travel in Phnom Penh. You can book online through Mittapheap. Sometimes agoda.com also has similar deals. You'd have to check. The Victoria is one of the only hotels I've come across that does not offer better deals directly than through an agent.

If you wanted to stay in a guesthouse with no pool, know that you can use another hotel's pool for a day fee which varies from about $4/person/day for the Bopha and $15/person/day for the Victoria (but they throw in lunch and a quick massage last I knew).
