rkkwan or HKG expert

What's going on in HKG in April, especially the second half? I've noticed that hotels are about 1/3 to as much as double above March/May rates. Already many of the hotels don't have every style of rooms available.

Unfortunately I can't change my plans at this time as I will be on my way home from NZ/Australia. My dates are April 23-27. I found acceptable accomodations and I'm still thinking about splurging on my favorite hotel, but at $400 a night I may just stay at what I have, about $160 a night.

Anyway I like to know what's going on. Holiday period for the locals? Big convention? Sporting event? I did little research but can't find anything definitive.

Thanks

I am pretty sure it's due to the Guangzhou Trade Fair 4/15-4/30 (with a 5-day break in the middle). Same thing 10/15-10/30. Same dates every year.

Since there are still many more overseas flights into HKG than CAN, and there aren't that many new hotels in Guangzhou, many people do stay in Hong Kong during that time when transitting.

The Rugby World Cup Sevens is March 18-20, so I don't think that's it.

Thanks rkkwan,

I did find something else as well, Hong Kong Houseware Fair, April 21-24. Last year it was attended by 31,000 buyers and had over 2000 exhibitos, so that's another 10,000 or so people.

Between these 2 conventions, the hotels don't want my little tourist $. :-(

I tried Priceline, both the HK and US versions and went as high as $150 (uually they go for $100-$125) for 5 star and struck out. I will keep on trying as long as I can. Maybe the hotels will release some more rooms closer to the dates.

Pardon me, I do not mean to hijack this thread but rkkwan, am I remembering correctly that you live in Houston? There is a Houston Fodors GTG in the works, and we'd love to meet you. Of course, this invitation extends to all Fodorites. Here's the info:

P_M: Yes, I've read those threads, and have responded in one. Since I will be here all the time, I'll go regardless. I'll let bellairegirl and others decide on time and location, and I'll just show up. :D

Hello,

I am going to Hong Kong in May (thank goodness it is not April, after I saw your post!) and here is the hotel I will be staying at.

http://www.langhamhotels.com/eaton/hongkong/

Expedia has the Eaton Hotel for $180 per night (after all taxes and fees). It seems to be very well located and the rooms look nice. It is also close to a MRT stop.

Good luck ;)

Glad to hear it, rkkwan!! See ya there. :-)

IUHoosierGirl - While the Eaton is a decent hotel, it's not worth US$180 a night, even for 4/23-4/27. One can book the Kowloon Hotel for those dates on hotels.com and elsewhere for about $120.

Or the new 5* Langham Place in Mongkok for $200.

Or the 5* IC Grand Standford (in TST-East) on Travelocity for ~$180.
