River Kwai trip
I will be on a tour but have a free day with the option to see the River Kwai, bridge (I know there's really nothing left of it), etc. This would take a whole day. My question is how much did you like the trip or would I better off visiting other sites, i.e., Jim Thompson's house, instead. There are probably several places I could see closer to Bangkok. Thanks for your opionions

Sorry, that is "opinions". To clarify, there are major sites included on the tour in Bangkok (usual for a tour) but a lot left out.

Nancy -

We went out there on our first trip to Thailand but I wouldn't recommend it if you only have a few days in BKK or are extremely interested in war history.

We went because we had 10 days in BKK and I was very interested in the gemstone industry there. However, it is mostly a tourist trap as far as gems are concerned so, like I said, I would say don't go if you only have a few days in BKK and aren't really that interested in the history. There are many fun and interesting things you can do "closer to home" than going out there.

Lynn
T-126
Although a 2 day trip is much less of a rush I considor River Kwai as a place that will always remain in one's memory. Stay away from gem shops etc, but the museums and the cemetaries hold a fascination if you have any interest in history at all. Being from Australia it holds very special significance to me. For many Brits, Ozzies and Kiwi's it is far more a 'pilgramage' than a tourist trip. If you are interested in the history and stimulating your 'spirit' I would not miss the chance. It is very 'humbling'(?spelling)to visit.

Sarah
T+++++

I thought Jim Thompson's house was not essential to see. I have never been on the river Kwai side trip, though.

I really enjoyed Ayutthaya for a day trip with a cruise back to Bangkok. If you like ancient ruins, you'll like this and the cruise back to Bangkok was great. It's relaxing after a day at the ancient capital and an interesting look at rural and urban life on the river.
I was able to book it at my hotel the evening before.
