Craig, I think that's a fallacious syllogy. I'm less well-traveled than Nicky and/or Pook, and I never watched "24".

ekscrunchy May 26th, 2010 02:17 PM

Hanuman: I agree. And I don't blame him for doing what he did when he walked in on her with that old boyfriend.

And I will be the one to ply you with the drinks when we finally do meet!

ekscrunchy May 26th, 2010 02:28 PM

Also: I don't know Bob..if Hanuman were there he would be able to figure out the length of the pools. He probably would not even have to put his superlative detective skills into use--he would just ASK someone on the staff! But that is why he is a #1 world famous special agent...

Craig May 26th, 2010 03:40 PM

A fallacious syllogy? Please translate for us common people in Connecticut.

Gpanda May 26th, 2010 04:18 PM

Syllogy is a made up word from the Mid-west. They don't really speak English there and can't be expected to be up on polysyllabic words. Wheat, corn, oats. That's pretty much it. I suspect BC meant syllogism. That is defined as follows:

–noun
1.Logic. an argument the conclusion of which is supported by two premises, of which one (major premise) contains the term (major term) that is the predicate of the conclusion, and the other (minor premise) contains the term (minor term) that is the subject of the conclusion; common to both premises is a term (middle term) that is excluded from the conclusion. A typical form is “All A is C; all B is A; therefore all B is C.”

Logic, something else that goes unused in Michigan. It doesn't grow in fields or fit into a football stadium. What's the use?

Soory, BC. Couldn't resist. You've been too nice to Bob and there are consequences to such foolishness.

K loved her paddy walk... i did internet most of the morning... we had a nice swim after her return.... then we had lunch in the garden---good mixed indonesian plate: chickrn-beef-rice-satays-veggies---very yummy...

spent the afternoon on our front porch reading...

we met 4 german women who had moved in for the nite and at dinner a dutch couple.. most people stay here for only one nite... we will be 4 nites..

btw, i made a mistake... i booked here for 5 nites when it should have only been 4. that is being mediated at the moment... should not be a problem...

watched some tv both before and after dinner last night
.. we keep the a/c at about 20C so our room is bug free and comfortable, if not a bit chilly...

we both had padang beef rendang for dinner last nite... sort of a spicy brisket served with rice...

i had a coconut cream pie and k had green coconut filled crepe for dessert..

bed by 10...

Thursday

up about 7... the usual breakfast in the restaurant: fresh fruits, juice, tea/coffee, toast and water...

i did internet and then we will venture down to candessa area for a seaside lunch...

bookchick May 26th, 2010 05:25 PM

Actually the first time I heard the word, it was uttered by a British gentleman.

I've been too nice to Bob??? Excuse me???

In any event, Craig's "assertion" that Nicky and Pook haven't traveled enough/should be traveling more has nothing to do with their intake of "24". As stated, I rarely travel these days and I do not watch "24".

Gpanda, really, about 6 months ago I made the guy pick me up at the airport, I stayed in his house, ate his food, asked him to drive me to a pharmacy, and he also chauffered me to and from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. I don't get where I've been "too nice" to him. Oh, yeah, I also made him drive me to the airport for my flight home.

While I have to admit my alma mater (and current place of employment of Gpanda's son) does have a spotty record on logic (allegedly they turned down Sartre for a posted position in their Philosophy Department), it's not totally foreign to The Wolverine State.

i should comment that this water palace is a wondersul stop over on the road east and north... mornings and afternoons you only hear the water flowing and splashing from the fountains... during the day outside guests pay to come here to swim in the fountain pools... this AM there must be 40 kids, all dressed in pink and purple here for an outing.. they are so cute and well behaved...

in the evening it is very quiet and the view across the sea to lombok is lovely...

DonTopaz May 26th, 2010 05:28 PM

Syllogy is a train of logic that is initiated with the intake of Psilocybin mushrooms.

This last from a man who'd have us believe the Charybdys of Dershowitz is a place, in either an anatomical or geographical locale.....

I may have mentioned this in the past, but I couldn't resist. Bob's reference to Karen's "paddy walk" brought to mind a stroll with a bunch of Leprechauns. Little men in Kelly green wandering the rice fields of Bali. Remember, they live in a metropolitan area in which every other bar is named "Paddy's".

BC-he only pretends to be nice. It's all a ruse. Don't be misled. He was a banker for 30 years. Can't you just see him twirling his moustache while foreclosing on a house? Snidley Boblash.

bookchick May 27th, 2010 06:23 AM

Gpanda, the drugs are permeating your brain stem now. That's the only explanation I can come up with for your intrepretation of "paddy walk", as well as thinking Bob is, in any way, like Snidley Whiplash/Boblash. I'm not alarmed, though, because this is a sign the chemo is working!

Bob & Karen, those pools sound so refreshing! And the meals sound terrific, too. I really enjoy a good chicken satay! I'm probably the lone midwestern corn pone in the bunch here who's never heard of green coconut, but I had not. Keep us updated on what goes on, please, I need to hear more. (Living this year vicariously through the vacations of friends.)

Thanks,
BC

the coconut was not green..that probably is my poor description... the crepe was dyed a bright green---sounds horrid but tasted delicious...

rhkkmk May 27th, 2010 05:35 PM

so this time i felt immediately more comfortable with the driving... the roads are only about 3/4 as wide as they should be and people, cars, motorbikes, etc jut out quickly from everywhere, both on the right and the wrong side of the road... you really have to concentrate..

we drove down from the water palace into amlapura which is a mid sized town... some quite nice houses and compounds... from there we retraced along the road we had come in on to candidasa which is an up and coming sea side resort town... it is a one main street type of place... it has one ATM, but does not work for international..... we stopped along the sea for a few minutes and admired the surf and the small islands off shore... this is also a bit of a dive center... 3 guys selling sun glasses came to us immediately.. i joked with them..

we continued along the main road SW. we spotted a side road which leads to Tenganen (sp), a small enclosed town which we had visited some years back... it used to be a closed society until the 1950's and is now open to the public for a small donation... the village preserves the old village life styles with communal overatures.... two cows lie on the main track---the track is stone and dirt and is terraced every 100 feet or so... most residents now sell weavings and other goods from their homes. everyone is very friendly... lots of residents just sitting around....

at the entrance there is a large basket shop where K had purchased things in the past and she did so again... OMG more huge baskets to take home.. now there is also a ring of small shops outside the village... she bought two 2 meter lengths to have made in blouces in bkk next fall...100% cotton with lovely designs ans subtle earth colors...

last time putu took us to meet a famous man in the village who chronicales the history of the area on hand etched pieces of reed---about the width of a ventian blind.... now the main street is lined with people selling these decorations and history pieces..... 10 or so are mounted with strings on top of each other to make a wall hanging....

one of the staff at the hotel had suggested that we eat at alam asmara right on the beach... it's rendevous restaurant is very lovely and we had an excellent meal... they specialize in fish...K had fish and chips... i had the best meal yet-- a chicken cutlet with salsa and pineapple with pots and veggies plus rice...yum!! good fresh cakes for desserts...

back to the hotel with a stop at the hardy's general store and ATM in amlapura...

karen swam and i read my book and then some tv before dinner...

dinner was 2 appetizers for me: a pumkin soup and goat cheese raviollis with mustard and butter sauce with some green salad on top... K had the grilled young chicken with curry sauce and grilled veggies... i had the green crepe with coconut and K had grilled banannas...

tv and then bed... tons of rain before, during and after dinner, plus all nite and again this AM....

Friday

the usual routine... dashed to the restaurant between heavy showers...

later this AM we head north, along the coastal road to lovina for 4 nights...

after an hour and 1/2 there we went back to C for lunch.

bookchick May 28th, 2010 02:49 AM

This sounds great. I particularly enjoyed reading about Tenganen. Perhaps Cambridge could become a closed society in which Andy would serve many functions. Seriously, to think Tenganen was a closed society 50 years ago and now one can drive into it (albeit in the most pastoral setting possible)is astounding. (At least to me!)

Hope the weather clears for you and that you continue to enjoy yourselves.

Imagine if I were on this trip and the four of us spent an entire day driving around. By the end, two of them would be trying to strangle me. The other would be continuosly giggling. One out three ain't bad.

Needhamites visiting a closed society. How fitting! Must have felt like home. No new ideas penetrating a way of life. Needham fits perfectly. But not our beloved Cambridge.

bookchick May 28th, 2010 06:25 AM

Lcuy and I found Needham perfectly charming.

OTOH, I know from having made a trip into Needham with Gpanda, that Needham was plagued by a bank robbery and a torrential thunderstorm that day. Coincidence? Hmmmmmm......

I'm interupting this absurd report for a complaint from cambridge. I just completed the 42 days of heavy radiation and chemo with very little side effects (That is not my complaint). We have three day weekend stretching before us with beautiful weather predicted (Also not a complaint). Beth has drawn up a "to do" list for this weekend. That's my complaint. I will have to spend the entire weekend hiding and ducking out of chores. I'm up to that task, but I shouldn't have to do it. She's too smart for me to now claim fatigue. Maybe if I fake a slip and fall, I can pretend I hurt my ankle. WWBD? What would Bob do?

simpsonc510 May 28th, 2010 02:26 PM

Andy, I think a twisted ankle would do the trick. You don't need to fall... just a slip/slide is all that is required.

BTW, did you read that the panda at Chiang Mai zoo just celebrated her first birthday the other day? I hope you sent along some bamboo... (are you her father?)...

Carol

bookchick May 28th, 2010 03:19 PM

...and that's what you get for telling everyone how remarkably well you felt all through treatment. I mean, gee, you're an attorney, by this point in your career, I'd think you'd have acquired some convincing acting skills, but apparently not. What the heck were you thinking? Anyway, I hope Beth enjoys a long, luxurious soak in the hot tub, closing her eyes and pretending she's in Bali..while you work on that "to-do" list.

Carol, heaven forfend!
