My life has reached it's low point. Beth, Seth and i were going to dinner and Seth, unbidden, said "No Kimballs". What he meant was that he was demanding that I not "Pull a Kimball". I was not to speak to the management of the restauurant for any reason. On the way to the restaurant, there was a pperfect opportunity to cut in front of some cars and cut in line. This is the original "Pulling a Kimball". I elected to pass on the opportunity.

BTW, BC is just jumping in to hold up Bob's end of the repartee because he has been shirking his duty. The rules are simple. I make fun of him and he whines. BC has taken up the whining.

All of our comments fall within the forum guidelines. None of my attacks on Bob are personal. They are all impersonal. Hence, no violation.

They are making Penang and Clove Hall sound really good.

I atually think "some" of the chit chat makes a post interesting but i do understand that for some people it may be hard to get to the facts .However the chit chat is part of the friendly feel on this board. I havent read the rules yet but i can imagine..... (i dare say this will all get pulled!)

i agree nicky... then people who find things difficult should just move on to the next topic.... same for name calling, swearing, etc... this is not grade school or PC school, or is it????

a post that sticks only to the facts is often totally boring imo...

Also agree about moving on if you don't like a topic, there are certain questions on this board i would never answer because they irritate me, but i choose to ignore them> However that said some of the threads get a bit distracting when non related bits are discussed. I think a bit of moderation is OK but take away all the chit chat and you take away some of the heart of this board. (IMHO)

nicky... did you go to the sire museum restaurant?? simply fab... a muffin kind of place... in fact i think it was his chinese grandfather's house...

No Bob we didn't, we mostly went to the places on that Bon Ton list i gave you & the guerney hawker centre. (I do remember one of the cab drivers telling me that the new world hawker centre is the best one in GT)

Tuesday

our last full day in penang... 4 days was perfect for us...
we would rate it an 8... very easy to do things here... people are fantastic.. language is not a problem... accomodations are lux to backpacker... food is decent... plenty of interesting sites... taxis generally are 12 R wherever you want to go in georgetown...

our last full breakfast as well... Wednesday we are leaving at 7:30 so can only have a toast and coffee breakfast..
we love the "silver" tray service each morning and again at tea time.... the boys are so pleasant here at clove hall......

We ordered a taxi to take us shopping. First stop was Sam's batik at 159 Penang st.... Clove hall told us that this shop is where the boy's tunics come from: long white tunics with decorative white designs embroidered on them (chickan work). Boston harbor introduced us to chickan work after her indian trip... K bought about 10 chickan blouces, 2 silk tops and a granddaughter dress, plus a thing or two more... they do not open until 11... very nice family run operation: mens, ladies and childrens clothing---most from india but not all--good quality...discounts for quantity buying..

from there we walked a few blocks to the high-rise penang MBK---called Prangin Plaza ... it is 5 floors similar to MBK in bkk... not as crowded with shops or people however... After not too long i had had it and was hungry... we took a taxi to Mama's Nyonya Cuisine.... it was very small and very busy... lots of big families... we got a table for two after 20 minutes.... we ordered fried herbed chicken, a speciality... an eggplant dish, a shrimp and tamarind tomato sauce dish... an onion and dried shrimp condiment... beef randang, fried egg rolls... and white rice---79 R... Honestly there was not one item we really liked... I think this cuisine is not for us...

We then rushed by taxi to Cheong Fatt Tze blue mansion museum for the 3PM tour---tours only at 11 and 3... 12 R... One hour tour... very interesting unique house of one of the wealthiest chinese men of the last C... do not miss this place...

our guide was fantastic... she also gives walking tours of penang---i have to dig out her card later for you....

From there it was a taxi back to the hotel for a well deserved swim... and hot tea...

later i did internet, paid our bill--2200 R for 4 nites and made a res for a taxi to dinner...

btw, i keep talking about taxis... i use them because i am lazy... Georgetown is a place where you can easily walk all over for the most part...

For dinner, i convinced K not to go to the seaside chinese seafood place she wanted to go to... we chose instead to visit the Sire Museum Restaurant at 4 king st, just down the road from the gem indian place we favor... Food is billed as international...

Primarily it is a restaurant but it houses a commerative small museum of parts of the collections of another malay/chinese banker... The interiors rival any "in" restaurant in manhattan... its gorgeous... the food is outstanding and its moderate in price: K had a huge heap of sliced tendeloin, medium rare with veggies and potato... I had a mushroom apetizer followed by a typical penang noodle, shrimp and egg dish--- beer and wine, plus water with tons of ice...

K had one scoop of mango sorbet and i had a fattening walnut brownie, ice cream and a bit of chocolate sauce....i could not resist... i may die tonight... 139 R.... a must visit...


we are all packed, almost, for our 7:30 departure, to singapore on air asia at 9:40...

2.5 days in sin and that finishes this trip... sin-seoul-DC on korean, and then delta on to boston...

sorry you didnt like the food at Mamas- we loved nyonya cuisine and their beef Rendang was one of our favourites. Ah well diffrent strokes for different folks and all that.
Glad you liked the Blue Mansion, i thought it well worth a visit too.

Enjoy Singapore, don't forget about Eng Seng.....

Yes, the Blue Mansion is a highlight. Glad you enjoyed Penang. We thought the food was wonderful from the tasty hawker fare to the great Indian food in restaurants and hole-in-the-wall places.

Just reading this makes me want to go back there. (What else is new!) Clove Hall is stunning, but it sounds as if the E&O has a better location, though, right?

(I already KNOW they have a better pool!)

I agree i think the E & O location is great. We walked everywhere although that said if we go back to penang i will look to stay at CH.

Cheryl and I were talking about where we'd stay next time around. I suggested Clove Hall for at least a couple of nights, but Cheryl says the E&O.

Thanks, in advance, for spending funds in sweet Singapore; personal/professional biases to be sure. Given your joy of engaging various 'general managers', would gently suggest time with a fine GM and a most special 'Singapore Girl assistant' over drinks at the Four Seasons. You could grow to love that specal SIN business travel retreat.

Wish you were supporting the Thai economy this trip, and there's still time, bob: Thai Airways, business class, SIN-BKK, 'just for the day'. (And, if you end up at a certain all-time cherished 'parlour' for a few hours, well, your secret is safe with me.)

Have fun, come back to Bangkok soon (last week, for a few meetings, so many lovely 'crew' still at the Sheraton Grande; wouldn't know about 'your place', but suspect they'll still take your cash), and don't forget those late-night, in-room Singaporean masseuses. (Quite possibly, less than one-third your age.)

Yeah, I also though they looked to be about 45. Nasty bags under the eyes, more than a little turkey skin on the neck, etc. Make-up helps, but when you have to trowel it on....

... Singapore Girl, You're a Great Way to Fly ...

Arrived in Singapore at noon. So far been enjoying the IC, and Arab street. Kind of nice to be back in the arms of total comfort...my blouses were pressed, and there is a hunky guy(definately NOT Bob) pouring my wine...what more could I ask for after a month of travel?

If its a clear day head over to the SIN Flyer. Great views and about an hour for a complete revolution. Have fun, and bring home a chili crab for all of us.

Make mine a black pepper Crab!

If you do go on the Flyer, go at sunset. Fab views going up and city lights coming in for the landing. You can get the fish pedicures right by the Flyer exit too. Lot of fun!
