we also found Mary and her associate very friendly, eager to please and charming. They also were able to freely bargain.
The merchandise they carry seems top notch.
McBeanies see you at harmonique. Did i set a time??
my local phone number will be: 08-3296-6163 once we get there about 4:30.

Monday--sadly our last day in Shanghai
Breakfast in the club.
About 10 we took taxis back to stall 223 in the cloth market to pick up K's vest. We had to wait about 10 minutes. While waiting we went back into shop #239 where K bought a couple of scarfs for herself and for gifts--all silk. about $25 each. As in all discount places look things over very carefully.
The vest fit perfectly and she was very pleased---400 RMB or $67. We were told that the embroidery is hand done, but K is not sure??
Peter bought several pieces of cotton to have shirts made in bkk. really nice quality. Pat bought 4 pieces of cotton to make bed pillow cases. Outside the market all the girls bought cheap jewelry from "Tibet" vendors.
From there we took taxis to the Xintiadi district. This newly recreated area houses mostly bars and restaurants popular with both upscale chinese and expats/tourists. We chose a German theme restaurant called Paulaner Munchen. We all had sandwiches: salmon on a baguette, hamburger-rare, and lady burgers (grilled chicken breast), some with fries and I had a reuban with sauerkraut.
From there it was back to the Renaissance. Pat went up to the pool, karen packed, I did computer and P&L escaped for a while from us.
We will meet again in the club at 5:30 for a couple of drinks before heading to the Lost Heaven Restaurant on the Bund for our Shanghai GTG. We look forward to meeting the coke smiths and to reconnecting with Dunbugs (sp).

It sounds like a good time is being had by all. You have chosen a great time to be away from the east coast. Sandy is creating havoc, lots of people being evacuated... they even closed the stock exchange.

i thought i was just talking to myself...
Monday (cont.)
Taxi to Lost Heaven 1/2 block from the Bund. We were shown to a large long table on the 2nd floor in a corner--quite dark.
We waited and waited for the others. So we ordered drinks and an appetizer after perhaps 1/2 hour. Then out of no where June (Dhunbug) appeared at our table... They had been waiting for us at another table with better lighting so we moved there. So we were now 10 for our Shanghai GTG (HItravellers, rhkkmks, pat, dhunbugs, and coke smiths (3)). We distributed the luggage tags and pins from fodors and gave the smiths the bags from Aline.
We had fab food and lots of conversation and typical GTG fun.
Even 'Little Cokie' (4th grade) put up with us. He is a very cute kid.
Food: 2 eggplant dishes (one w/shrimp and 1 w/tomato sauce),
chicken stir fry, chicken with hunan sauce, tofu with hot chili sauce, rice, stir fried beef, vegetarian stir fried noodles and a hunan veggie dish.
A very pleasant evening for all, but then there was the getting away--it was raining and taxis were scarce. we all waited at least 20-30 minutes.
Tired again and another good sleep.
Tuesday
A travel day. Our China Eastern flt was at 12:25. We left the hotel at 10:05, a tad late. There was traffic but we got to the airport in about 40 min---174 RMB.
Check in moved well as did the 2 or 3 levels of security. Boarding was quick and we were in the 2nd row of coach with Pat in the first row (31). This plane was more comfortable, but not fab. We left the gate 10 min early and were airloft before the departure time. 4 hours and 20 min to BKK. Meal served was worse than worst ever.
Our arrival gate could not have been any closer to immigration which was a bonus. We were 2nd in line. Luggage came out in 20 min.
We had arranged AAC limo but could not find them so we took a taxi. Asked for large taxi and got an SUV (700 B + 70 B tolls).
Arrived at Anantara just before 6PM. There was quite a bit of traffic.
We had a dinner date at 6:30 at Harmonique across the river. Took a taxi and got hung up around base of Silom Rd. Peter and Linda were waiting for us. We waited for McBeanies but they were no shows (she was sick we learned later).
Fab meal--prices have increased quite a bit but still excellent food: combo appetizer plate, morning glories w/ garlic, yellow curry crab, 2 shrimp sizzle platters, rice, laab-chicken, lemon chicken---about 3000 B. vodka, and many, many Singhas.

Hoping Sandra is better today! Not fun to not feel well when travelling.
Did you see Asiatique from Anantara? There is definitely a shuttle boat from your hotel to the Asiatique night bazaar. I saw one pull up there the other night.

BOB I had a small issue with AAC they were not there' when I came out of immigration but then 2 or 3 minutes later the lady turned up but wasnt clearly holding the sign with my name but I caught a flash of it as I turned round. First time for me ( and have used them numerous times - in fact i think it was Bob that first put me on to them)so hopefully Craig they will be there but may be worth an email.
