We found the subway in Beijing very user friendly. It is ranked No9 in this list of The Worlds Best Subways.
1. London, England
2. Paris, France
3. Moscow, Russia
4. Madrid, Spain
5. Tokyo, Japan
6. Seoul, Korea
7. New York City, USA
8. Montreal, Canada
9. Beijing, China
10. Hong Kong
11. Sao Paulo, Brazil

I think rating Beijing's subway that high is crazy. Stations at the older lines are really ancient - I'll find you a link to pictures. And they don't go near where most tourists find useful.

Check out these recent real-life pictures in this forum for the older Beijing #1 and #2 subway lines. Check out the station facilities and ticket counters!

yes, there is no way Beijing's subway could be ranked above Hong Kong's, let alone within the top 10 in the world. The survey is a little suspect, as the coverage of destinations is still very limited. If they can stick to their plans, it will become fairly robust in the coming years, but even then maybe still not a global top 10.

As a tourist, the subway is only really useful for getting to/from Tiananmen Square (& Forbidden city), Lama Temple and Wangfujing.

There is an excellent wikipedia article telling all you want to know (and more) about the subway system.
