restrooms

Here's an odd, but necessary question. How are the public restooms in Hong Kong? We've heard everything from nonexistant to really bad, so we are wondering what do you do if you're out at Stanly Market(and some of the other places)and need to use a bathroom? It's one of those questions that you don't normally think of until necessary, but would be nice to know.

Washrooms do exist. If you are looking for a typical North American washroom you are better off going into the hotels, department stores, convention centre or even McDonald's. There's not much you can do. Bring little packets of tissue paper because when you are out at Stanley Market, the public washrooms out there might not have toilet paper.

Hi Rosie -

Ditto on above post.

We just got back from our 2nd trip to Hong Kong on Monday. The restrooms I used out in Stanley were the "in the ground" type. They are porcelain and not just holes in the ground but there was no paper. Some of them can be messy but the ones I used were O.K. Just make sure you bring the little packets of paper. Also, if you forget, don't worry. There are 7-11's all over town and little convenience stores in the underground. I saw these packets at many of these places.

Hong Kong is great. Need any other tips? We love HK.

:-)

You should also bring some packets of "wet wipes" for your hands -- if there's no toilet paper, there's usually no soap either!

We are planning a trip to China this month and I have been told by everyone to: 1. women should not wear pants or tight skirts. wear shorts or full skirts since a lot of times the floors are filthy (and pants would drag on the floor) and sometimes you have to squat so a full skirt is easier, 2. take anti-bacterial wipes so you can clean your hands afterwards, and like everyone else has said, 3. take tissues because of the lack of toilet paper situation

Yes bring TP and dont use the bathrooms in the ferry terminals they are NASTY, also we found the nicer hotels are OK also and they dont mind if you use restrooms but bring small chg becuz the Peninsula and Regent have attendents and they expect small tip for providing hand towels etc. But treat yourself and have a drink in lobby of Regent (for the view) and have tea at Peninsula but dress for tea it was expensive but that is lunch.
