Restaurants in Mandalay
Any suggestions for places to eat in Mandalay?
|
The Sedona Hotel at the SE corner of the palace complex (between 26th & 27th Sts.) had the best restaurant we tried in Mandalay.
For coffee there's a very nice cafe, JJ's, about a block east, also on 26th. They have wifi. |
The hotel we stayed at, the Rupar Mandalar had a nice restaurant with excellent food. It's a bit out of town, though.
|
Hotel by the Red Canal has a good Indian restaurant, it's also a bit out of town.
The Green Elephant is also Indian and was good honest food. It's not far from Hotel by Red Canal. We had many snacks in coffee shops/bars which were good, mainly samosas which I love. |
Thanks! We are staying at Rupar Mandalar, but thought we'd like to also go elsewhere. As it turns out after a full day of sightseeing we will eat here again. but maybe one night we will be energetic end and give one of the suggestions a try.

We stayed at the Inn at the Red Canal and had dinner at the Indian restaurant there, I didn't think it was that good. Nothing wrong, just relatively bland and relatively expensive. We had a fun lunch at a diner on the main drag - - sort of a 1950s American diner set up, can't remember the name but it is in all the guidebooks (time frame on this - - a year and a half ago). C

As we'll be arriving next week in yes travel's footsteps I'm looking forward to trying some of the suggestions, is there street food in Mandalay?
|
Yes, but whether to try it or not is up to you. Sanitation in Burma is very poor.
|
Lots of street food, but none of it looks appetizing or safe.
|
Most food in Burma is average to disappointing, Mandalay is no different. People have gotten used to eating to live, and the food has gone that way. I know an old granny who is Burmese and a brilliant cook, but we didn't find anything liker her food when we were there.
However, Burmese street food is steps above Cambodian. Cockroaches and spiders and mice out of the wok are not my thing, and I'm an adventurous cook. |
We have had very good so far in Burma.
