Did you know that when they catch the sharks for shark fin soup (while the shark is still alive) they brutally cut off all the fins and throw it back into the ocean where it suffers even more horribly by and ultimately being torn to pieces by other sharks. Absolutely brutal way to suffer and die. Another thing is that there is a very high level of methyl mercury in the eaten shark fins. Bonjour!

Well, by eating them you are creating demand for shark fins, and thus, more will be slaughtered in this fashion whether you choose to accept it or not. But next time you're wolfing them down, try to remember the profound pain suffering these poor animals went through for this so-called "delicacy" (which happens to be laced with a neurotoxic form of Mercury). I'm not an animal's rights fanatic, but this form of killing animals is absolutely grotesque, vicious, and heartless, and the people who eat them knowing the facts are simply cro-magnons.

Sorry, I got heated when I see that people like to eat the fins... I saw the video of how they do these horrible things to sharks and it made me hate the people who know this and still eat them. They deserve the mercury poisoning that comes with eating them.

Thanks for the info. This is going to be my first trip to BKK and we will be eating many interesting items but we will not be eating shark fin soup.:0)

The difficult question becomes whether or not to patronize restaurants that serve Shark's Fin Soup. At what point does one become complicit? On the other hand, how much scrutiny is appropriate? Necessary? I suspect there may be vastly different opinions on these.

We will be in BKK Oct 19 and 20 and Nov 1 through 4. Any of you fodorites want to meet for drinks? Frizzy haired people are particularly welcome to join the group. I've had such fun on this site, I think it would be great to meet some of the regulars.

You know you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good meal! Likewise, spending a lot of money does not guarantee a good meal!

On Sukhumvit Soi 5, across the street from the Amari Boulevard Hotel, is the Foodland Supermarket. In the Foodland Supermarket is a lunch counter called the Took Lae Dee restaurant. (Took Lae Dee roughly means "good and cheap!)

Thai, European, and other Asian foods cooked right in front of you while you wait. Almost like a free cooking lesson!

You can even buy a steak off the meat counter in the store and the restaurant will cook that "hand picked" steak to order for you! (For a small fee.)

I have been using this restaurant every time I am in Thailand for probably ten years! One of my favorite dishes is Indian (yellow) chicken curry - it's real good and cheap too! (I buy a couple bulkie rolls from the store bakery to complete the meal!)

Has anybody eaten at the famous 'Chote Chitr' in the Old City/Old Bangkok?

Yes, we ate there and there have been a number of others who ate there as well. I know of at least three reviews on this board. We loved the food and will return at least once this trip.
