Restaurants in Bangkok
I am on my honeymoon in April and we are stopping off at The Peninsula at the beginning of our honeymoon as a special treat. We will probably eat there one night, but can anyone advise of a really special place for the other night to eat!?
Thanks so much in advance. |
Really special? Oh, it's a treat to come up with a list for you!
My first choice would be the China House at the Oriental Hotel. It's a victorian house on the grounds of the Oriental, and I believe they have the best Peking Duck anywhere. It was an unforgettable experience. A lovely Thai restaurant with excellent food and fabulous, romantic decor is Mahanaga. It's on Sukhumvit (or just aroud the corner on one of the Sois). If those don't appeal to you, tell us more about what you're looking for, as Bangkok is filled with really special restaurants. |
Bed Supper Club for something really unique!!!
|
Kathie, we our trying to decide between Mahanaga & Face because of limited time. Went to Mahanaga last trip & it was gorgeous, though we didn't care for the lamb (a bit fatty). Haven't been to Face. If yo had to choose between the two, which would you pick? We're definately going to China House, which we haven't been to yet.

I have been to both. I like Face better. Bed is best.

CFW, I thought the setting at Mahanaga was more special and the service was better. I had excellent food at both places. After trying both the Indian and Thai parts of Face, we both voted for the Thai part as better food. Someone who was there recently noted that the service was a bit spotty - that was our experience as well. It wasn't bad service, but a bit slow or less attentive than I would expect at times.
Bed is interesting and fun. The food is good, though it's not Asian, I wouldn't even call it fusion. While Bed is an unusual experience, I wouldn't call it romantic. Does anyone know the whole story of the Bed concept? I remember there was a Bed in Amsterdam in the 1980s, I believe, and someone recently metioned that there is currently a Bed in Miami... I remember it was a hot concept about 20 years ago. |
Maybe we'll skip face, though I would like to try the spa. Perhaps lunch? The service is always so great and the people so nice in Thailand why go to a place with mediocre or less attentive service? I know everyone will disagree, but we have seen the pics & read all the descriptions & I don't think Bed is for us. We like romantic (at our age!) old house & lovely garden type of places (with good food of course)..sorry, but to each his own. Guess we're just not hip & modern -- but who cares, we're happy! And our kids think we're cool...

The Thai part of Face is open for lunch and the food really is excellent. As you know, I loved the spa and the prices were very good.

face is good for thai lunch...although you miss the beauty of the nite lites and candles ....
i have a restaurant listing if you would like it...it lists lots of different types of food... [email protected] and i will send it to you.. china house would be good...so would lord jim inside the oriental...i loved bed and you would too but food is generally continental....biscotti in the four seasons hotel is excellent... face indian rest. is nice but not exceptional the thai restaurant in the garden at the penn is wonderful...dinner only...you need a reservation...set meals for two at moderate price...food is very diverse...it is next to the pool.... jesters in the penn is exceptional as well.... you might just do the two penn places?? very different foods... |
I have eaten many times at Le Normandie at the Oriental Hotel. Its a fabulous restaurant, very, very expensive but in my view worth it. It has a wonderful view over the river, be sure to ask for a window table which most are. It is beautifully decorated, formal but not stuffy. The staff are wonderful and friendly particularly when you have been there as often as I have. Book well in advance as it is not a large room, but I warn you it is not for those on a tight budget.

I'd go with Sirocco for this one....hands down. It is the perfect dinner experience and will be a great, great honeymoon experience. Bed and Face are great, but Sirocco is much more the right atmosphere for what you're looking for.

hmm, for a really romantic AND unique experience then I think Shane's suggestion to go high up and eat is good. Though I've never eaten at Scirocco's, only been to the bar. Same with Vertigo. Still, would love to eat high up!
I love Face too - not tried the Thai section yet, but love the Indian section. Been to Mahanaga and was... disappointed. Sure the setting is nice, but the food was hit and miss (Thai fusion) and the service was more keen to pay attention to the table of 10 next to us rather than serve our lowly table of 2. Hardly romantic. |
For a romantic setting Sciroccos would be hard to beat. A spectacular view off the city and the right kind off live music, it has to be experienced to be appreciated.
|
The top of State Tower is the most incredible spot in town. If you don't eat at Sirocco, at least go to Sky Bar after dinner. It is the perfect end to en evening in Bangkok.
|
Vertigo at the top of the Banyan Tree on sathorn
|
We did not eat at the Oriental's nightly bbq but it is outdoors by the river and the food looked wonderful. It is right across from the Penn.

We have reservations for Bed -- are trying to pick a few more. Am curious about Koi, Mistral, Blue Elephant, La Dalat. Jester's sounds great for atmosphere and food, Face as well (well reviewed for Thai).
We only have three nights out (first night I'm assuming will be a bust with jet lag -- hate to reserve for that). What would you chose and why? And how late do people go out for dinner? We're used to NYC -- feels as though, given Bed's set meal starting at 9, that Bangkok is an earlier town. |
dinner is earlier than in europe for the most part....
we usually go at 7... bed is a must....then i would choose le delat indochine (there are two on soi 23...le delat and le delat indochine)... one of the upscale thai places would seem in order or one of the regulars like tongue thai or harmonique or gallery cafe |
Haven't eaten at Vertigo on 61st floor terrace of the Banyan Tree but have had coctails there in the evening (moon bar) and the setting is spectacular!
By the way, re Face restaurant, if you don't have time to go there remember that Face Indian has a stand in the Emporium Department Store food court which is pretty good and fast |
thank you !!
What about the restaurant at the Sukhotai ?? My husband has been reading online reviews (he's a chef)and found one that said their Celadon doesn't dumb down the Thai taste. I'm wondering if Face Thai won't just be more Lanna style cuisine and we'll get that in Chiang Mai. Also have visions of going to dinner with my large bags from the Night Bazaar ;) |
