Restaurant recommendation & meals budget
I have 2 questions
1.We will be celebrating our anniversary while in Bangkok. Can you recommend a nice/romantic restaurant for dinner. It's ok if expensive as long as the food is great! 2. What's the average meal cost per person per day? Not including breakfast. We don't really need super expensive meals. We can eat anywhere from safe street food, average restaurants to fancy ones. We would like to know what to budget. Thanks! |
My current favorite place in Bangkok is the China House - a Victorian house on teh grounds of teh Oriental hotel that serves the most incredible Peking Duck. Our full meal there, Peking Duck, Pearl Jasmine tea, and a shared fresh Mango pudding for dessert, was US$44 for the two of us, including tax and service.
You can eat fabulous Thai food at many of the best Thai restaurants for under US$30 for two people as long as you don't order wine. There are some very expensive places in bangkok, but there is no need to go to those places to get really fabulous food. |
I second Kathie's vote for the China House and Peking Duck. I took my wife there for her birthday in February and it was fabulous. We are returning to Bangkok next year. I recently asked her what she wanted to do this time. The only restaurant she mentioned (out of the 8 we tried on our last trip) is China House for the Peking Duck.

Thanks will try China House.
What have you heard about Basil and MahaNaga? |
I've heard excellent reviews of Basil, and it's on my list for November. I ate a Mahanaga in Nov. 2005 and it was excellent. It's billed as being Thai fusion, but the dishes we ordered were Thai (and not fusion). I assume it depends on what you order.
I also had excellent Thai food at Lana Thai, the Thai restaurant at Face Bars. |
We've written a lot on food in Bangkok. Do any of the other regulars remember some of the previous threads that we've had a food discussion on? Happy Travels!

I just ate at Basil on Thursday and thought it was great! The appetizers -- papaya salad and shrimp on a rice cake? -- were the best part!
