Message: Hi there,

I would agree with both those who suggested The Normandie Grill at the Oriental and the dinner cruise. It really depends on what you are seeking.

If you would like French cooking, then The Normandie Grill is one of the best places in Bangkok. While not to the standard of a 3 star Michelin restaurant in Europe it is very good. However, you will need to be prepared to spend over $100 per head with modest wines.

If you are looking for a Thai places then I strongly recommend the Loy Nava dinner cruise. I posted a mail about this a few months ago, but it appears to have disappeared. I include it below.

I have posted some other restaurant reviews in the rsstaurant section too.

-------------------------------------

One of my most pleasant experiences in Bangkok has been taking a romantic dinner cruise along the Chao Phraya River and its historic banks.

The oldest dinner cruiser is the Loy Nava, an original antique teakwood rice barge, which is surrounded by flowers and twinkling lights. Service is impeccable and the food is excellent. At 880 Baht per person (about 22 dollars) - it may have increased by now - there is nothing that compares with it.

Upon arriving at the boat, by means of a very comfortable complimentary minibus, we were first struck by how pretty the boat was - so different to many of the modern monstrosities plying the river. We were greeted by traditionally attired girls who offered us a fragrant jasmine garland and a traditional rose water sprinkling.

Our candle-lit table was adorned by fresh orchids and a lotus flower at each setting. Gleaming antique teak-wood surrounded us. Within seconds we were offered refreshing scented cooling
towels. Drinks were a fraction of the price of the hotel at which we
were staying and wines, which are always dubious and expensive in Thailand, were well chosen both for quality and value. We were presented with a beautifully illustrated history booklet with a
description and map of all of the sites we would pass. The very attentive staff told us we could keep it as a souvenir of the trip.

The food was heavenly, and service perfect but never intrusive.

The owner passed around chatting with anybody who wanted to chat offering information on the sites on the river and a fascinating insight into life in Thailand in general.

My wife had chosen a Traditional Thai Menu, while I had chosen a
Thai Seafood Menu. Together we had at least 5 appetizer, soup, about a dozen main courses, tropical fruit and classical Thai dessert, tea/coffee and bottled water.

If I remember correctly my seafood main courses included delicious grilled shrimp, a snapper steamed in lime juice,
succulent mussels, deep fried shrimp cakes, a sweet and sour squid dish, while my wife's dishes included first rate green curry redolent of coconut and only using choice pieces of chicken, a
mild beef curry which was very flavorful, pork satay in delicious
peanut sauce, and many other dishes I have forgotten.

A young girl, again attired in traditional costume played the sweet
sounding kim (a type of Thai xylophone) as we gently cruised along the river.

When the staff discovered that it was our wedding anniversary, we
were each brought a complimentary glass of sweet dessert wine and a small gift of a framed Thai flower. We almost felt guilty accepting the free gifts considering the entire trip was so
inexpensive.

When leaving the boat we tried to tip the manager who politely refused our tip, indicating that our satisfaction was sufficient reward for him.

In all, it was one of the most pleasant experiences we have had in
Thailand and a memorable and romantic evening in a beautiful setting.

I highly recommend it.
