Rent a car in Taiwan or Take a Train/bus?

Hi, 6 of us (DH, 3 kids ages 8, 10, 13, MIL, and me) will be traveling for a week after a week in Taipei. We would like to go to Taroko Gorge and Sun Moon Lake, for sure--can anyone please tell me if it's best to hire a guide, rent a car, or just take train or bus? (I speak Chinese but DH and MIL do not). Any other recommendations appreciated!

I do not speak Chinese, and used trains and buses, plus one car and driver for one day in Taroko gorge (I used the bus the other day). However, if you are visiting Sun-Moon lake and are willing to drive a car would probably be easier.

Thanks, @thursdaysd, I'll check into it. I think we need an international driver's license...

Rented car and drove with wife and parents from Kaohsiung to Kenting and environs and back. First time driving in Taiwan. I read Chinese, and find driving there pretty easy. Database on rental company's free GPS pretty good. Only thing to really watch out for (for those driving mostly in the US) are the motorcycles and electric scooters.
