@ David_Dunn, many Thai and other restaurants are plenty available on Lang Suan (two sois walking distance from the Ren). Great Thai food at Home Kitchen and Nguan Lee (as recommended by a NYT article). Great food with reasonable prices. See here: http://milepoint.com/forums/threads/...01/#post-71462

Trying to decide whether to cancel my reservation at the Shangri La for this special deal. For a first time visitor to Bangkok, I thought it was best to stay on the river. Not a shopper but the restaurant choices near the Renaissance sound better. Any thoughts on whether I should change my reservation to the Renaissance?

Kalil, the photos are super! Thanks for sharing the link. Your review is very thorough. I will have to try to stay here at some point. I am also 'gold' with Marriott and would love the same upgrade! Would love to get this low rate, but probably will not have a reservation to BKK for July in time to beat the deadline!

happy, I do think a first time trip to Bnagkok is made all the more special by staying on the river..... BUT this is a great location but I am a serial shopper...
If budget is not so much a concern, stick with the Sl-la as it's a "better" location if you are going to do some of the tourist sites.

The river area is majestic and you can easily take the river ferry from the Shangri La to the main tourist attractions of the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, etc. However, transportation in Bangkok is fast, cheap, and plenty available (BTS to Saphan Taksin then ferry as above). I did not stay at the river area (ROS) until my 12th visit to Bangkok but touring the river in a long tail boat, and diner & cruise are musts on the first trip.
@ HappyTrvlr, it's all up to your preferences: both locations are awesome and if you have the time and don't mind the higher rate at the Sahngri-La, why not try them both!

Thanks everyone for your restaurant recommendations!
During our stay, we'll have an opportunity to have 2 lunches and 3 dinners in Bangkok.
Where would you eat lunch? And where would you eat dinner?

On previous trips we've stuck with our old standby's: Baan Khanitha & Harmonique. Also lunches at MBK & Chatuchak or the hotel. This trip we're going to base most of our time around the hotel, The Renaissance. We'd like to eat in that neighborhood or somewhere along the BTS. A mix of casual/local for lunch, and nicer places for dinner. No European Food, only Thai/Indian/Asian Fusion...

Thanks again!

-David

Thanks to Bob for the Hotel Tip and Restaurant Recommendations... I think we've got our 3 nights covered... Kinarree, Lemongrass, and Face Hazara (Indian). Can't wait. Never get enough of this wonderful City! This board and all your recommendations is great...

David, I'd like to suggest a small change in your restaurant choices. Rather than Hazara at Face, I much prefer Lana Thai at Face. We've eaten at both places over the years since it opened. While I love Indian food and, indeed, cook Indian food at home, I find the India food there rather heavy. The food at Lana Thai is excellent. We have a number of favorite dishes at Lana Thai.

Also, are you aware of the spa at Face? Take a look at their spa menu. The place is very atmospheric, the treatment rooms in small teak houses with modern bathrooms and showers.

Kathie, thanks for that... I will take your recommendation, Lana Thai. What are a few of those favorite dishes? I'm taking notes... This trip we're going to be a tad more adventurous with our menu choices (vs. the ole standby's we know from home).

I will check out the spa at Face. That might make for a nice late afternoon & evening.

Thanks!

A few faves; Duck with kaffir leaf, all of their curries are good - we're partial to the green curry, and the Pandan chicken is an excellent appetizer. Enjoy!

Hi All,

Just returned from a wonderful 3 weeks in Thailand. We finished it up with 3 nights at the Renaissance Ratchaprasong (July 3-6). The hotel is wonderful! It is very "uptown/modern/trendy/chic"-- We had a king size room on the 19th floor- we looked out toward MBK/Siam Paragon/Central World. The Grand Hyatt and Amarin Shopping Center were directly below us. My favorite part of the hotel was the indoor/outdoor swimming pool on floor 21. The pool is covered, but has 1/2 walls of glass (other 1/2 open to outside). Some of the best views of the City. (Oh, and the Steam Room/Sauna were also quite nice!)

The Chidlom BTS is directly in front of hotel, and Haagan Daaz & Starbucks are practically next door.

Didn't make it to Face or Kinarree, but did have wonderful meals at both Baan Khanitha & Gaggan (Indian-fusion). Gaggan is now my favorite restaurant in Bangkok!

Election Day, July 3rd, was uneventful- no marches, riots, or burning of buildings. We could see the Central World from our room, and could see where last years burning of the building took place. It looks like it's slowly being repaired.

The weather was wonderful-- Mid/Late 80's. Most pleasant we've experienced in Bangkok.
It was nice to walk around in the evening and not break down in perspiration after 2 minutes of walking out of the hotel.

This was our 1st time in the Ratchaprasong area. Our preferred option is to still stay on the River at the Royal Orchid Sheraton, but if not there, we would most definitely stay again at this Renaissance Hotel, or at one of the others right there--- Holiday Inn/Intercontinental/or Grand Hyatt. We very impressed with the convenience of the shopping/eating/drinking venues in/around Ratchaprasong.

Back home less than a week, and already thinking about a return visit next Summer!

Thanks for the update, I too got that great deal and will be staying there next month. I've stayed in that location before and love it but it will be a first for me at the Renaissance so glad to hear it's a good hotel. Yep thanks for the tip Bob.
