Rehydration formula
My Fodor's travel book tells me that I can mix salt & sugar to make a rehydration drink. I know this is a really stupid question, but are salt & sugar readily available in Thailand?
Thanks! |
yes, of course. I would also expect you could find pre-mixed rehydration salts at any pharmacy.
|
You can buy pre-mixed rehydration packets at sporting stores such as EMS or REI- just add water.
|
You can but the powder sachets in 7-11 and other conveninece stores and pharmacies everywhere, cost about B 8 each ( about 20 US cents ), and all those have bottled water too.
If you want a mix when out and about invest about B 13 ( about 34 US cents ) in a bottle of water with the twisting seal cap on it that opens and closes, and you can add your powder to that, put it in the hotel room mini-bar and then nice and cold when 'out and about' there are also plenty of the 'energy' soft drinks etc available everywhere. The pleasant flavoured packs a lot nicer way that mixing salt and sugar! |
Those 'energy' drinks are around B 20 ( about USD 50 cents ) I have no idea if content is more use that the powder mix but if you keep 4 or 5 of those sachets it's easy to mix with water wherever you go.

Well yes, of course, salt and sugar are readily available in Thailand else all the residents would be suffering from all those complaints you get without them!!
My suggestion - if it's so important to you - cos I really don't think you are going to get a serious dose of the trots in Thailand - and if you don't want to buy the packaged variety before you leave home - just collect those twists of sugar and salt freely available at the great McD, etc, etc. and take them along. Easy, peasy, hey!! |
Thanks - I really do appreciate this web site and all your help - I have a tendency to "flake out" when I feel I'm out of my element - and sometimes I really am OUT OF MY ELEMENT!!
|
I did get a serious case of "the trots" as fuzzy called it. While in Chiang Mai I was seriously ill for a couple of days. thank goodness I had brought some antibiotics with me to knock the bug out, so to speak.
During the time I was down I drank plenty of the rehydration solution made from the powder that my, oh so cautious, boyfriend had brought along. It helped me regain strength quickly. |
