Refining Taipei Plans
Righteo, for those who have been to Taipei...
I've got three nights booked in (for mid January). I chose the Hotel Proverbs, love the location and the rooms and reviews look excellent. We'll get in to Taipei mid-to-late Friday afternoon (via train from Hualien after a couple of nights in Taroko Gorge) and we will be leaving early on Monday morning. So our main sightseeing days are Saturday and Sunday, plus the Friday night as well for a night market. We have an offer for a personal food tour from the mother of a friend of mine, which would be wonderful if it happens, so I'm not booking a foodie walking tour as I originally planned. But I'd love thoughts on best / worst night markets and daytime food-focused stuff in case it doesn't happen. Of the big sights, which did you love and which did you visit dutifully but not enjoy as much? We may want to skip one or two in order to have time for the food side, so I'm after honest reactions. Particularly helpful to read your reasons for preferring the National History Museum to the National Palace one. Just to check, when you refer to the "Taipei History Museum" and to the "Historical Museum", are these both what Google labels the National Museum of History? |
Glad you enjoyed it. From my very old Lonely Planet guidebook looks like I was indeed referring to the National Museum of History, next door to the Botanical Gardens, both times. (Wow, amazing how many things I didn't get to!)

I had a better experience at the National Palace Museum, and would rank it on the top of my must-see list in Taipei, but I do agree with Thursdaysd's assessment of the immense crowds. We went at opening so we were able to have the first hour almost to ourselves but the groups started to really fill in as the morning progressed. I remember the chaos as we were leaving. I also very much liked the Chiang Kai-Shek residence.
