Recommendations for the Best Day trips from Tokyo??

I need some fun interesting day trip ideas to do solo from Tokyo at the end of May while a friend is working each day. Any must sees?

How long will you have in Tokyo? We only had five days and didn't get to see everything we had planned.
Historic Shrines and Temples, Museums, Parks, shopping areas, and best of all, eating the fabulous food.

There are many places - including Nikko, Hakone, the Fuji 5 Lakes area, Karuizawa, Kusatsu, Izu, Kamamura/Enoshima, Kawagoe, Takao, Okutama, Yokohama, the Ushiku Great Buddha, Nokogiriyama, Minakami, Showa Kinen Park, and more. There are regional rail passes you can get for nearly all of them. A Tokyo Wide Pass or Greater Tokyo Pass might be a godsend.

Just 5 full days as well. Thanks Adastra, so much to see! Which would you prioritize with limited time? What were the stand out, not to be missed spots and easy to see in a day and back to Tokyo for the evenings?

It all depends on what you want. If you like hiking, then Takao, Okutama, or Nokogiriyama. For outdoor activities, then Minakami. If the weather is clear (and it rarely is), then seeing Mt Fuji can be nice at Hakone or the Fuji 5 Lakes. There are other places to see if it's clouded over though. For hot springs, Kusatsu. The end of May is the season for hydrangea, water lilies, and irises, and the hydrangea at Kamakura are very famous (Meitetsu, Hasedera Temple, etc). Also in Tokyo there is Hakusan Shrine for hydrangea and the Meiji Shrine garden for irises, plus the Horikiri Iris festival. For old Japanese history and culture, Nikko & Kamakura. One of the closest places is Yokohama - it's a big city too but a different personality than Tokyo. The Landmark Tower has a killer view, plus Chinatown, the foreigner's cemetery, and the Sankeien Garden is one of Japan's finest.

Where else are you visiting in Japan?

Thanks so much Adastra, this is great!!
HappyTrvlr, just Tokyo - staying with a friend who's there on business and coming back in evenings for work events etc.
