Reasonable, safe hotels

I will be travelin to Thailand in Feb. with a girl friend and we are looking for a safe hotel that has air conditioning and doesn't cost $100 per night. Any suggestions for Bangkok & Chiang Mai. We would rather put our money into shopping and tours than fancy hotels.
Thanks, Lora and Cindy

I have a few recommendations for Bangkok. Last time through I stayed at a place called Shanti Lodge in Banglamphu (not on Th Khao San, which I would NOT recommend) near the National Libaray on Sri Ayutthya. I think I paid 200 Baht ($8 CND)for a decent room with air con. really helpful, friendly staff. This time I plan to go a bit more "upscale" either Suk11
http://www.suk11.com
or the Atlanta http://theatlantahotel.bizland.com/

both around 500 baht/night (<$20 CDN)- look at the websites you'll fall in love. Both places have come highly recommended.
I can't remember where I stayed in Chiang Mai...

You can get nice comfortable air-conditioned hotels for about US$25-30.
Try this site - They also have bookable hotels from around $8 !

http://r24.org/huahin.20m.com/cheaphotels

In Bangkok, try the Royal Hotel - about US$25 with a swimming pool and buffet breakfast included. In Chiang Mai, try Gap Guest House - about US $15 per night.
