Dukoral is not available in the US. It was developed as a cholera vaccine. Cholera is not a risk for travelers. But it is partially effective against travellers diarrhea caused by a number of e. coli strains.

Really? I thought that everything we had was available in US. Everyone that I know who takes this swears by it, no one has ever gotten sick in any location when they have had it. Too bad.

No, it was never approved in the US. I've heard from many of my Canadian friends that they swear by it.

An interesting side note. For many years, it had been believed that most travellers diarrhea was caused by "unfamiliar flora and fauna." That is, they believed that the bacteria causing travellers diarrhea were not disease causing organisms, but simply local bacteria that the traveler's digestive tract was not accustomed to. Only when Dukoral was approved and studied did they find that most travellers diarrhea is caused by various strains of e. coli.

Dukoral was one of the things my doctor insisted I have lol. He explained about cholera, but said the so call Delhi belly was caused by the same organism - e, coli so maybe he is on the ball lol

Patricia, cholera is not caused by e. coli but by vibrio cholerae, often abbreviated v. cholerae. Most cases of travellers diarrhea are caused by e. coli. It just so happens that the vaccine developed for cholera is effective against many strains of e. coli. So if your doc told you that cholera is caused by e. coli, your doctor is confused.

Maybe he said v. cholae, and maybe I am the one confused - lol. However, I have done the Dukoral thing

Hi, This is Anupam and like to travel a lot. I am widely travelled in India. I can be your local reference for safe and enjoyable trip to India. Do ask for any question. Initially I will suggest, when you land in India and go to a shopping place, buy cotton salwar kurtas at least two suits. They are colourful, pleasant for wearing in sunlight and you will not get curious looks.
