Raffles Angkor - Which room?
 

I'll be in Siem Reap in a month (for three nights) for my honeymoon and was wondering which room type those of you have stayed there would recommend?

Landmark or State room? I believe State are in the new wing, but is there any other difference?

How was the food at the hotel?

We stated in the State room...very nice, with terrace and lovely bathroom. Not huge but fine. The Landmark rooms are more authentic colonial and might be larger. But would need to be on upper floor for privacy.
The food is good international food with local dishes. Attractively served and nice buffets. Pleasant but not spectacular. Our room rate included breakfast and dinner. We had a very special meal in the "extra charge" dining room. Well worth the $12 a person extra charge, but I think it was a dress rehersal for the dinner the next evening for the Cambodian Prince who was giving them most amazing dinner party for Italian investors. His dinner had huge ice sculptures of Angkor Wat figures all over the private garden. If we had the same meal the night before, he ate very well. Do make reservations for the special dining room before you arrive as it was already booked most nights when we were there. You will love the pool!! The spa was also good. We thought Raffles was more interesting than the other hotels. If I remember..ddrinks were expensive but not outrageous.

This is just my opinion, but I think the Grand Hotel D'Angkor is the most pretentious hotel I have ever seen. The entire hotel has been remodeled, thereby losing its colonial patina. I almost died when I witnessed a piano player in the Monkey Bar, dressed in head-to-toe BLACK CASHMERE, in JULY, playing Broadway show tunes. The lobby was filled with prententious Angelenos in Prada who looked like they were auditioning for AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL. It was just a very naff experience, belonging in Las Vegas, not Cambodia. JMO, sweetie.

We found the Raffles Siem lovely, and had no sense of it being pretentious or trendy, both of which would turn us off. I think we were in the Landmark rooms ( we were with a small group and didn't make the reservations). The room was very attractive and comfortable, with a view over the pool. Do be ready to use the pool. When we were there it was hardly used, but those of us who went in loved it. The food was very good, and service in the hotel pleasant and helpful. Have a wonderful honeymoon- congratulations.

I'm an Angeleno and definitely not pretentious.Pretentious people can be found anywhere and come from all over. I just ignore them and go ahead and enjoy my vacation. They have absolutely no affect on me. Happy travels!

It is hard to ignore someone who is parading around in front of you, speaking loudly ("Oh, this magazine selection is so sparse. I can't wait to get back to LA.") and trying to show off their Jimmy Choo sandals by putting them up on the coffee table, three inches from your tea. Blimey. Good for you, guv, if you can ignore that.

Did I also mention the stupid cow in a Ralph Lauren safari outfit having her picture taken whilst walking in and out of the brass elevator in the lobby? I kept looking around to see if Mario Testino was doing a photo shoot for ELLE. How utterly naff.
