Postcard Challenge Project
Greetings fellow world travelers! I am a 7th grade World History teacher near San Francisco, USA. My class of 12 year old students is doing a year-long project of collecting postcards from around the world, and would like your help. If you would like to participate, please send us a postcard from wherever you are, or wherever you go, and tell us a little about your adventures. Our goal is 1,000 cards...it’s a large goal, but we think we can do it!
Do you have a box of old postcards sitting in the closet? Send them to us!! We’d love to see the world through your postcards! Put an email address on the card, and we’ll say thank you! Thank you and Happy Traveling!!

Mr. Keillor’s 7th Grade Class
Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School
26890 Holly Hill Ave.
Hayward, CA 94545 USA

Dear Mr. Keillor and Class,

What a fun project you have planned!

I am leaving for Hawaii on November 14 and will be travelling to Singapore, Bali and Thailand over the next four months. I have logged your address in my travel book; so you can count on me for postcards.

Meanwhile, if you may enjoy visiting my travel pages at www.virtualtourist.com/zae

I have written various travelogues there about Egypt, Greece, Thailand and other countries I have been to. I highly recommend the story "Beggar Goddess" which you will find on my Thailand page.

'Talk to you again soon by postcard! Thanks for the offer.

World traveller,

Dr. Zae
Mr. K,
I have some postcards from this summer that I didn't send, but let me send them to you and your class now and tell you a little bit about France and Italy. One of my favorite cards is from the Hansi museum in Riquewihr (Allsace region of France). What a wonderful way to inspire your children toward diversity and travel.
Mr. K - I dropped a large envelope full of postcards from a recent China trip in the mail to your class today. I ran across them last week when cleaning out a box and was about to throw them away.

I hated history and geography while I was in school and did everything in my power to avoid taking them. I finally got interested in them when I decided that studying places was just a preliminary form of travel planning. I will send your class cards from all my upcoming trips.
|
Mr. K,
How wonderful! Going to Paris in ten days and will send you a postcard. I'll pass your address to others who travel and have them do the same. What a great way to get students interested in geography and history!

Has anyone checked this out to make sure it isn't just a way to collect e-mails and addresses (seeking old postcards)?

Just wondering.
|
Dear Observer---

Just to make sure, before we dubbed this a Hot Thread we called the school and spoke with Mr. Keillor and a few of the students involved in the project. It's for real, and the students are looking forward to the postcards.
Look for a feature story on this project ("Calling All Postcards!") later this week on fodors.com.

Best,
Dave Downing
Community Coordinator
Fodors.com

Sounds like a great project Mr. K- I am traveling to Cober Peady next month. I know your students will love to get a postcard from there! Have you ever been? (Didn't think so) Its a wonderful place- you'll see when you get my postcard.

I am a retired elementary school principal. A few years prior to my
retirement a young teacher in our school
did a similar project. His was called:
"Trucker Buddy". A tractor trailer driver sent cards as he travelled around
the US. He even came to our school with
his rig to meet the kids. Hurray for
Teachers who work every day to make
learning interesting.

Hello Mr. K. Thank goodness this went to the larger board. I was worried it would not get enough attention. Thank you, Community Coordinator,,,,Great Idea! Mr K. my stuff will be in snail Mail. I am sorry I have no postcards left, but I have some great brochures from Rome. I hope that will be ok. Good luck, Judy

Why on earth is this appearing in the Asia forum?
|
I think it's on all the forums. Asia's probably the most exotic place from which these kids will get postcards.

|
Mr. Keillor and Class,
If you can find Coffeen, go about an inch to the west and you will find Bunker Hill! Hope you get lots of cards. Great idea! Good on you, Mr. K.

Hey Matt! What a terrific idea! I'm sure I have a few postcards from past travels sitting around somewhere that I can send to you. I'm searching right now for one from the exotic port of "Sorento". Sound familiar? I'll let you know if I find one. Obviously you are as talented a teacher as your sister Debbi is! Much success with this and all of your other projects. Sharon P.S I lived in Fremont as a child and would go shopping in Hayward!

I'm on my way to India. Will be glad to help with your project, sounds great. I've never been to Rajastan, but I hear it's beautiful beyond belief.
