Post December Election Security
I have a 2-week trip planned to BKK and Chang Mai centered around Christmas. The election, which has been postponed a few times, is now scheduled for Dec. 20 something. There were demonstrations and unrest around the time of the last scheduled election, which never took place. I'm now kinda worried that there may be trouble after this election if the the results are controversial. Does anyone have insight into what the mood is regarding the Dec. elections? I've kept an eye on Bangkokpost.com, but not much is written about it. I would particularly appreciate input from Thai veterans like GuenMai, Kathy, RKK, etc. Thanks.

Having been to Thailand many times, even pre and post various elections, I have never expereinced any personal impact from these events. Even if there are demonstrations, you are unlikely to be affected much. Your hotel may advise you wher there are demonstrations and to avoid those areas.
I wouldn't worry about it. I do always try to keep current with teh events in countries to which I travel, and I'd recommend you continue to do likewise... without being unduly concerned. |
Anything *could* happen, but then, anything *could* happen anywhere, any time. It's difficult to say whether or not something might happen around that time. It's way to early to tell.
I moved to Bangkok just before the big 1992 demonstrations and crackdown. Even then, I didn't feel threatened. I wouldn't suggest changing your plans now, but things could be different in December. |
if there are any troubled spots they are usually away from the areas that tourists usually visit.....near to the current government buildings...
bkk friends told me that the coup which happened last year was almost a non-event.... as michael says not that something evil might happen, but it is highly unlikely... i would go forward with my plans....CM is certainly out of the circuit of gov't so it would not really be affected at all.... the king never lets much happen....they all look to him for guidance... |
MichaelBKK, I agree that it's way too early to worry right now. But as the election gets closer, if you still live in BKK and don't mind the trouble, please drop me a line at [email protected] if you see development that should make me think twice about making the trip in December. Thanks in advance.
