Ponheary on CNN

June 18th. Not sure about air times; I reckon it depends on where you are but it's the CNN Heros Series. Ponheary has been nominated for the award and they came to do the story, examining her personal history and the work of the Ponheary Ly Foundation.

At the moment details are sketchy but will post as I get them.

Here's the link to the website where they will post her with the other nominees after the show airs.

They spent the day with us at Angkor Thom, Bang Melea and Koh Ker school and village, that's why I'm posting this in a travel forum. Heh.

Lori

Looking forward to seeing this well deserved tribute. Hope it can make more people aware of the situation and help raise more money for the cause. You two deserve all the kudos that can be given, good luck!

Aloha!

rhkkmk Jun 12th, 2010 06:30 PM

great news...

Elizabeth_S Jun 13th, 2010 08:15 AM

Thanks for posting Lori - I'll pass this on to Katie as well.

thursdaysd Jun 13th, 2010 09:43 AM

That's exciting! BTW - did you ever contact NPR's "The Story" to see if they would do a piece? http://thestory.org/

Gpanda Jun 13th, 2010 12:48 PM

I'll be in Las Vegas. Do they even get CNN in Vegas? If so, forget poker and the other distractions, I'll be glued to CNN all day.

moremiles Jun 13th, 2010 12:51 PM

I'll try to get it here in LA too-usually we only get L.Lohan news.

crosscheck Jun 13th, 2010 02:17 PM

Wow - she deserves it!

jenskar2 Jun 13th, 2010 03:32 PM

Very much looking forward to seeing this and urging all my friends and customers to vote for her !!

Leslie_S Jun 14th, 2010 08:14 AM

Very cool! Will check it out.

jrseager Jun 15th, 2010 02:24 PM

How exciting! We'll be watching and rooting for Ponheary. Good luck!

dogster Jun 15th, 2010 02:48 PM

Well, I'm not sure I'll be rooting for Ponheary but, somewhere off the coast of Norway, I'll certainly be watching AND voting. lol.

Lori - might see you late July if you're in town. I have a yen for the Jayarvarman.

thursdaysd Jun 15th, 2010 05:05 PM

"off the coast of Norway" - another cruise? Or are you referring to the British Isles?

dogster Jun 15th, 2010 05:21 PM

Think Flam. Another sweet Death by Azamara. In London right now, fresh from an interesting evening. Think Tap. Think Novello. Google. You'll work it all out.

Now, back to Ponheary, who deserves far more attention than I do.

Marija Jun 15th, 2010 05:32 PM

The Hurtigruten mail boat?! All herring all the time. Nothing happens in Flam. The boat ride on the Naerofjord is nice. Those royalties keep pouring in. Must be nice...

simpsonc510 Jun 15th, 2010 05:34 PM

Panda in Vegas, Dogster in London... and li'l ole me in dull western Illinois...

(dog, I got it!)

Hanuman Jun 15th, 2010 05:40 PM

You West End dog take a Thames river cruise instead and come back to Bangkok.

thursdaysd Jun 15th, 2010 05:41 PM

Don't need to google, already figured London. Am considering whether to spring for a ticket in Montreal in July. Could use a little Norwegian cool weather right now myself - sweltering in NC.

Marija Jun 16th, 2010 05:45 AM

Gotta move Norway to Asia, not a big deal since Australia's already made the move, or craft a new widget, so we can follow along. Tell us about your glamorous return to the days of old...

Clifton Jun 16th, 2010 07:03 AM

Lori, I saw this the other day on the Asia board. I don't know Ponheary, but good on her (and you!)

Since all those who know her or likely to become involved with this organization would find them by way of the Asia board, I totally do not get why it's been thrown over here into no-man's land in the Lounge.

I agree with dogstar. The mods really need to be hired/chosen from those who understand a bit more about the content they've been asked to administer. In other words, travel and destinations. C'mon admins... for heaven's sake. Anything remotely chatty is relegated here? Could you make your travel forums any more tedious that way?

More importantly, Cambodia NEEDS organizations like this one and those organizations need to be found by people doing trip planning. It's not chit chat, it's about travel and respect for the destinations - what you need of them and what they need of YOU.

I don't know the person you are mentioning, but I LOVE CNN Heros, always watch it, and see the reports on many of the nominees during the year. This comment will top the thread so others may see it and maybe the editors will move it back to the Asia Forum.

Amy_D Jun 16th, 2010 07:34 AM

This thread has been moved to the Asia forum

Marija Jun 16th, 2010 07:40 AM

A loud (deleted) roar from dogster and all is in order.

dogster Jun 16th, 2010 07:51 AM

lol lol lol. Thank you Amy. As you see, Dogs bite. All forgotten, forgiven - and bravo you,/i> for recognising a mistake.

[for those a little confused, Ponheary went on a little trip to Lounge Hell - but she came back. There was a brief exchange of words, since deleted...]

Elizabeth_S Jun 16th, 2010 07:56 AM

Thanks for the quick response Amy!

offwego Jun 17th, 2010 09:43 PM

wow thanks for the rescue from the lounge! Mr. Dog, please give me a shout when you're here. I look forward to another evening spent solving all the world's problems with you...

BillT Jun 18th, 2010 05:44 AM

It was also on Larry King last night. I don't usually watch Larry as he is such a lousy interviewer- but in clicking around I found that he had a clip of her on last night!

Kathie Jun 18th, 2010 07:14 AM

I got an email from Cheryl this morning (she's at a meeting in Denver) who saw this on CNN and said it was excellent. She said she bets the PLF will get many donations as a result of this. I hope so!

Craig Jun 18th, 2010 10:31 AM

I just saw it on CNN at the office. The piece is exactly the same as what you see on the website - it is short and does not begin to tell the story but that is what media is about these days. In any case, it was great that the Cambodian school children received this publicity and, hopefully viewers will connect the dots and donate to the Foundation.

As offwego said, there are two trailers - one on Ponheary and one on Lori Carlson (offwego). The one that is on CNN is on Ponheary.

jules39 Jun 18th, 2010 10:41 AM

Excellent! So great to see. We were at Ko Ker school in 2006 too long ago!

girl_on_the_move Jun 18th, 2010 05:33 PM

I checked in with the CNN website while reviewing the day's news and was shocked and delighted to see Ponheary's face front and center for the main story!!! I met her back in '05 while backpacking with my sister. I am absolutely ecstatic to see Lori and Ponheary to be receiving this coverage - I hope it will bring great things! As an educator, I thank you for the work you are doing.

marya_ Jun 18th, 2010 08:33 PM

This is wonderful! We all left part of our hearts in Siem Reap back in 2006 when touring with Dara and going back to the house to meet Ponheary and the family was one of the most moving experiences of any travel anywhere, ever. Great work, Lori, and best wishes to you, Ponheary, and all at the PLF.

offwego Jun 19th, 2010 08:27 AM

Thanks everybody.

Don't be disheartened Craig. It was but a snippet, but already the exposure is paying off.

If she makes the top 10, she'll get the full story told. They were here 2 days and took some amazing footage in the village and school at koh ker, in addition to Ponheary touring at the temples and teaching a class at school.

I hope she makes the cut just so I can see the whole enchilada!

hawaiiantraveler Jun 19th, 2010 08:39 AM

Lori tell Pon she looked FABULOUS and so do you!

I am so happy that you are all finally getting the exposure for the children that you've worked so hard for and they richly deserve.

How do we help Ponheary make the top 10? Is there a way to vote?

Aloha!

offwego Jun 19th, 2010 12:25 PM

Hi HT

There's a panel of judges that decides the top ten (sometime In Sept) Then there's a thanksgiving special on CNN that features the top 10 and then viewers vote. I'll post again if she makes it and we'll circle the wagons. Fingers crossed!

Lori

Kathie Jun 19th, 2010 12:45 PM

We'll be in Sikkim, but I'm hoping we'll have internet access and can vote for Ponheary.

laurieco Jun 19th, 2010 01:23 PM

I saw it on CNN about an hour ago. It was short but well done and exciting to see. Lori, do let us know if she gets to the top 10.
