When we were in Bangkok in February, we heard that once upon a time that city was named as among the world's dirtiest. This greatly displeased the King of Thailand. He expressed his concern among political leaders and they set about to see what could be done about this embarrassing situation. The clean-up campaign caught on, spread, and became a nationwide program. We were simply amazed at Thailand's cleanliness -- streets swept, curbs almost spotless, and very little trash to be seen anywhere. Crews come during the night and sweep everywhere. The traffic and traffic noise in Bangkok are very intense, and the heat/humidity only make things worse. But as to pollution, we would give Thailand high marks in its campaign to clean things up. Too bad many other places have not adopted the Thais' campaign.

Alex, Bangkok certainly is polluted, but whether it is worse than other cities would be debatable. Taxis are air-con,so are malls and all hotel areas, all inside restaurants etc.
I doubt you would do much walking around 'ground level'. Main pollution is from vehicle exhausts stuck in endless traffic congestion. I should not worry too much if you stick to air-con cabs. At places like Grand Palace the air is ok.

Just came back from Bangkok. Bangkok is so big, you don't walk. Taxis have air cond. and are very cheap (US1.00) for most of my trips. Don't be concerned, even if you want there is no way to walk around as the distances are big.
Enjoy it!

Thanks a lot Al, Sarah, Stevens !

Ditto what Stevens said. This is not a walking city such as Paris so you really won't be out in the elements much. Just walking from door to door and that's about it.

There are some places you may be outside like the weekend market but generally, it won't be an issue.

Lynn

:-)

Thanks again Lynn !
