I visited PNG in August 2017 and was delighted to see some Birds of Paradise species in the wild and attend 2 cultural shows at Paiya Village and Mt Hagen.

A terrific report bringing some really exotic and fabulous birds right into our lives.

When i lived in the Western Highlands District, 1962-63, cast-off western clothes were not in effect and the people then seemed much closer to the forest. Yes, the cheap western clothes keep folks warmer but ugly for sure.

Still reading. Just got to the part about your birding threshold. I also found that birds were more difficult to see in PNG (although I wasn't on a birding tour). Perhaps because they are actively hunted (all those feathered headdresses) in PNG, whereas on reserves in Africa and ranches that host tourists in the Pantanal, there is less hunting pressure?

Thanks for posting this great report which I came across largely by accident. Never been to PNG but we did have a great couple of days in the Atherton Tablelands a few years ago - the bower birds were outstanding.

I am also enjoying watching the PNG team carrying all before them in the Rugby league World cup - did you know it's their national game?

So happy I came across this thread and thoroughly enjoyed reading about your trip. Thank you for posting. I'll be returning next year for a third, and probably last, trip to PNG and your splendid report has made me even more excited.
