Please tell ell me moi about soi

So, in response to one of my posts, I was told:

"....two that i know of are on sukhumvit rd very close to the nana skytrain shop and not far from soi 4...just walk along sukhumvit on the even numbered soi side and you will see them...."

To what does "soi" refer? Thank you.

A "Soi" is a side street and in your case it's one of the small road that connect to Sukhumvit Road. The Northern side of Sukhumvit have odd number sois and the Southern side have even number sois.

From my trip report last Feb/Mar:

"...I had a breakthrough in figuring out how the street names worked! For fellow newbies, the side streets are numbered and named after the main street. For example, “10 Sukhumvit Soi 12” means 12th Street (Soi is street) off Sukhumvit Road (the street address is 10). If you have a good map, which we finally got at our hotel, this little tidbit of knowledge makes it easy to find a place."

When taking the Skytrain or Subway, figure out on which Soi your destination is located and then find the stop closest. Be aware that some of the Sois are quite long and it might be best to take a taxi after getting off the Skytrain. For instance, when we went to the Playground Mall on Sukhumvit 55, we took ground transportation after the Skytrain.

Don't worry, it makes sense once you see it in action.

And soi does not rhyme with the French "moi" but is pronounced like the English "soy."

Muoi means 10 and can be used in conjunction with other numbers such as:

Muoi Hai - 12
Hai Muoi - 20

Moi or Moy in Thai is a bad word so don't use it here!

The map is not the territory - particularly when the map is transliterated ...
