Not famous?

Actually it is.

Hin Dat past Kanchanaburi is good, the Pai resort has several pools and the Krabi ones are excellent.

So Hanuman has actually never been there. What a suprise.

The hotsprings are not crowded like that if you go outside weekends or early morning.

Same with crystal lagoon

Relaxing if you dont go at Xmas time or peak times on weekends.

All the good snorkelling spots, waterfalls and hot springs are going to get busy at peak times.

Just common sense really.

Prachuap this is like your thinking that 3 star hotels are the same as 5 star hotels in terms of luxury with exception to the pool size!

Oh I've been there but not in the water as I did not find it appealing. If you've been to some of Japan's hot springs or those in Europe or the USA then I'm afraid Thailand's hot springs pale in comparison.

Don't really...... feel like arguing with you again but just take it like this - Thailand has hot springs but not world famous and it is something that a typical tourist will come to Thailand for. If one wants to drive for several kilometers and, IMO, waste a day then go ahead but again IMO there is nothing special about the hot springs in Thailand.

Ok,Prachuap, giving names of tourist sites and links is great. Most people who are smart enough to come to Fodors to ask travel questions are smart enough to follow through on the research and make their own decision on whether to stay at a 3* or a 5* place. They can also pick places that interest them based on pictures and comments by others. I have found that Trip Advisor is a good resource....better than a travel agent site...for obvious reasons.... the pictures aren't staged.

That being said, if you are serious about offering helpful information, your constant arguing and name calling when someone doesn't agree with you is not necessary....and definitely gives one pause as far as what you are on the forum for?!

"Thailand doesnt have the best in anything apart from Thai food"

Well, I know that was my reasoning for traveling across the globe to get there.

I just saw a Top 30 list on TA re: CR and it looks amazing. Now I have to read more to decide...

Thanks again everyone.

Perhaps ignore the trolls?

CR = Chaing Rai? Will the article make your decision harder whether to see CR - or do the loop Hanuman suggests around it? genuinely interested, as this could be me asking the same questions in a year or so.

Hi Cattail

I think I've made my decision. The Mae Hong Son loop looks gorgeous and since I can only do one or the other on this trip I'm going to do that. I can leave CR to another trip. They both look quite interesting.

So now my itin is shaping up a little bit more:

1. First 3 nights BKK
2. Next 7 nights in the north: Chiang Mai and the Mae Hong Son loop, going through Pai et al. I'd like to stay at least 3 nights in Chiang Mai as I'd like to take a cooking class and that sounds like a good chunk of one day. Would four nights be enough to drive this loop or is that pushing it? I would like to do at least one hike during this loop which means wherever that is will probably be a two night stay.
3. 4 nights in Krabi.
4. Last 2 nights in BKK.

I think that's a good plan. In Pai I have recommended a restaurant name "Baan Benjarong" to a few Fodorites and they all like it. Thai food, quirky owner and very tasty!

Looks like a great plan. For what its worth, I think you made the right decision choosing MHS over CR.

I think four nights would be about right for the MHS loop. One night in Pai, two in MHS and one in Mai Sariang would break up the trip nicely. There are community based trekking organisations in MHS, at least one of which is linked to the Fern Resort - a great place to stay and for hiking. Pai is nice but Soppong would be a nice alternative. we stayed at Soppong River Inn http://www.soppong.com which was very nice.

Flygirl, I seem to have missed when you are going....hope you get a trip report up before we go next year.

Your plan for northern Thailand sounds interesting. Please do let us know what you enjoy. That area has always interested us and we have enough time to maybe make it work on our next trip.

Yes, of course you are right.
