Planning Trip to Tokyo

I am starting to plan a trip to Tokyo for my 7 year old son and I. We will probably be there for about 10 days. I was thinking about a side trip to Kyoto for a day or two. Due to this trip, it sounds like the Japan Rail Pass is a good idea.

It seems like there is a lack of information about traveling to Japan, so I hope some of you can help.

My main questions are:
1- Can we get around Tokyo well enough with just the Japan Rail Pass?

2- Any "secret sites" for good deals on airfare and hotel? The big ones (Expedia, Orbitz, etc) seem to run about $1500-2000 per person for airfare and hotel together.

3- Anything we should not miss while there?

I'm planniing a trip to Japan too and have found tons of info on this site. Start with the Japan Tourist site and then search here for things that have interested you. There have been lots of posts about kids and how to entertain them while visiting in Japan, just search =)

Thanks to posts like this, I am starting to wonder if 10 days is enough. Thanks for the great info. Kiddieland looks like a good time for both of us. BTW, do the kids still dress up on Sundays in Harajuku? (And why/ what do they do when they dress up?)I think my kid would get a kick out of that too.

I haven't been back to Tokyo recently but I don't think there is any reason why they wouldn't still be doing it!
