Wow! I just discovered your post and am so glad I did. I'm in the process of planning a trip ti Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan for October 2012. Your photos of KYR are inspiring - now I know I've made a good choice - can't wait to go. How long did you spend in KYR? Where did you stay outside of Bishkek? Any advice for me about interacting with locals? Did you have a car, driver and guides?
I've arranged for air to/from and am currently in touch with a few travel local travel agencies, working up an itinerary and pricing. Whichever agency offers the best itinerary, pricing and customer service will win my business. Is there anyplace you could have missed? The best experience? Worst (other than tummy troubles)?
If you're still around, any advice is greatly appreciated.

We only had a short time there as it was a way home at the end of our long trip which got us a through flight to LHR and allowed us to see a bit of one of the 'Stans.
Best bits were the high land after crossing Torugart from China and Jeti Oghuz. No worst bits (other than <u>really</u> bad tummy troubles!) although in early June we did find it hot away from the mountains.

Hadn't noticed that; it's a question for Fodor's.
As I recall when I made the OP there was a Russia tag in the Asia forum where the post was made and tagged with the four countries visited. That Asia/Russia tag is no longer there so it would seem it has defaulted to Europe.
The thread shows in the three other countries tagged but not in Asia forum itself.

I saw this tagged for China.
I've just spent an absorbing hour wandering through some of your site. We've been to many places in common in the world, but you've opened my eyes to places I have yet to see. I am planning my China trip at the moment, including Hong Kong, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Beijing, Xi'An, Guilin and coming home via Kuala Lumpur. I'm still reading your reports on some of those places.
I can see I'll be spending a lot more time on your site.
PS I notice you've been to New Zealand, but no mention of Oz. Are we on your future itinerary?

Sorry, Alan, no plans on Oz. Nothing personal, just not on the list of those places we felt we really wanted to see. At present all of our original long haul aspirations have been met and we're looking closer to home with a trip to Tunisia planned and further thoughts of getting into some parts of continental Europe that interest us.
