phuket best beach
Hi!
We heard some said that Patong Beach is too crowded, if that is the case, which is the recommended beach?
Also, is Phuket Fantasea worth going?
Thanks!

mast

Hi Mast! We stayed at Kata beach in February and I would definately recommend staying there. From the three main beaches Kata is the most peaceful. Karon beach seemed also nice, but it is not as shielded and there can be strong sea currents. There is also a small reef near Kata beach, so you can go snorkeling (if there are not millions of tiny jellyfish in the sea, as there were when we were there..I tell you, it is not pleasant to go swimming when they are stinging all over..).

We drove by the Patong beach a few times and did not even want to stop there, because it looked so seedy. A lot of gogo-bars and shops and Starbucks (!).. not the things I was looking for anyway.

We went to Phuket Fantasea and it was OK. I mean that the show was OK, but the surrounding facilities were a bit rip off. Food and drinks were very expensive compared to stuff elsewhere. The main thing seemed to be to sell a lot (and I mean a lot..) junk related to the show (=elephant stuff). In the show itself there were many animals involved and I just hope that also they are enjoyinf themselves.

Otherwise we enjoyed our stay in Phuket (although Krabi was more spectacular) and hope you will too. I suggest also that you take a day trip to for instance Ko Phi Phi and go snorkeling (or diving). Siam safari jungle tour was also OK and Sea Canoe arranges beautiful canoeing trips.

Thanks Katja!
Actually our original plan is Koh samui but the ticket is hard to get (only Bangkok Air fly direct) so phuket will be the alternative. we are not interested in night spots but just want to relax. Is there horse riding in Phuket? My daughter would love to try it!
Again, thanks for the info!

mast

Hi again!
I am not sure about the horse riding. It seems though that there is according to these pages (chech childrens activities):
http://www.phuket.com/activities/

There definately is riding on elephants on the jungle tours, because we tried that!

H1 Katja!
May I know which hotel did you stay at Kata beach? I intend to choose between The Boathouse, Kata Beach Resort and Kata Thani. Any recommendation?
Also, June should be the monsoon season, do you think it is wise to go there? I just hope that it won't rain everyday!

thanks!

mast

Mast hi! Cannot tell you personally about the Kata Thani. But I have friends who go there every year. They like it very much.
Stay away from Patong. A stroll around in the evening for dinner is ok. A lot of restaurants. The beaches are too crowded and too loud.
I staid in Bang-Tao a bit north of Patong and it was fine. The only thing was the hilly road to go to Patong. We sometimes had to ask the taxi drivers to slow down. Although being Swiss, we are used to that kind of roads, but after a nice Thai meal late at night, that was just too much.

Enjoy Phuket!
