Phuket: Banyan Tree or Chedi

We are planning to stay in Phuket for 2 weeks in October 2002. As Amanpure unfortunately is too expensive for us, we will choose either the Chedi or Banyan tree. Has anybody stayed in (or seen) both of them and therefore can advise me, which on to take. Bright and clean rooms and plant and a luxurious atmosphere and service are most important to us. Many thanks for help

Hi

I haven't seen the Chedi but visited the spa at the Banyan tree a few years ago for a treatment day. The Banyan Tree was beautiful, it was very exclusive and luxurious. The service was fantastic too, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it at all

Cathy

I stayed at the Kata Thani a few years ago. Very comfortable and good restaurants. We were able to hire a driver to go into town and to see sights.

Renate: The Banyan Tree is quite far from everything on Bang Tao beach. It's a large resort of different luxury hotels. You're pretty isolated there, if you want to have fun in the evening. There is a small shopping mall, but expensive too. Drive to Patong for some action in the evening is quite a drag. Very hilly and cap drivers are crazy there. The Chedi is somewhat closer to things, but still very isolated.
I've heard only very good comments about the Kata Thani and do second Barb's suggestion.
It's very popular with Europeans. Less isolated too.
One of the few resorts south of Patong with direct access to the beach.
Greetings from Switzerland.

We had 3 days at the Chedi and although a decent hotel the prices were very high indeed for the extras. We took a trip to Patong beach. Goodness me, what a disgusting place. Afterwards we went to Koh Samui which was like being in a different contry, much nicer and cheaper too. Imperial at Tongsai Bay was excellent.

rob: I agree with you that Patong isn't great at all. I would never want to stay in a hotel there.
Nevertheless, it's quite fun to go there once in a while be it just for a stroll, some shopping, etc in the evening. And then, there are some nice restaurants with great and affordable food, too.
All, depends a little on your age and what you like. Just to stay in a marvellous but secluded resort, no need to travel that far.
And then, as you said, extras do cost a lot in those high-end resorts and you can get them far cheaper outside (speaking about mineral water, soft drinks, fruit and snacks).
Renate let us know where you went and how you liked it, please.
Busi nach Oesterreich!

Curious? Why do people say Patong is just plain simple fun but when people mention they are going to Pattaya they get horrified reponses? Strange indeed!

Topping for Cath re. The Chedi.
