Phoning the US by Cell Phone

I purchased a Nokia cell phone at MBK mall in Bangkok in late December so that my daughter could call her boyfriend back in the United States. This worked out excellent as we could buy additional minutes at any 7-11 when travelling. I was happy we made this choice because if you buy a phone card you can only use them on special yellow phones located at really noisy and inconvenient locations.

We had hoped to get back to MBK to sell the phone back but were unable to get there the day we left Bangkok. I'd be happy to sell the phone for 1/2 of what I paid for it to anyone planning a trip to Thailand. I have the business card to where we bought it (in Thai) so you could always sell it at MBK at the end of your trip and get some $ back. Will sell the phone for $30.00 US and ship to anywhere in the US for $6.00. It is a Nokia model #1110 with a charger and the Sim card. Contact me at [email protected] if you are interested. I wrote down the instructions for loading minutes into the phone (you purchase DTAC minutes).

Again, this was an excellent solution for calling home! There is nothing worse then traveling with a 19 yr. old who can't talk to her boyfriend!

Not interested in buying the phone, but just posting to say that in 1981 I somehow survived a 6 weeks in Europe when I was 21 and only spoke with my then-boyfriend about twice or crackling lines for brief expensive furtive moments...amazing what "hardships" we can survive when forced too....he also wrote letters (to Post Restante for collection, don't even know if that exists anymore), and while I don't have the boyfriend anymore I do have the letters, which I find hilarious now and are a much better memory than any phone call (or e-mail I think). I am kind of glad I am not 19 now...no romance in the long-distance longing any more....

I agree with Cicerone regarding letters and the hardship of time apart but believe me it's a lot different if you are young and by yourself travelling vs. travelling with your mother! With me being the mother, this solution worked for us.

For others interested in the phone, I have someone interested in purchasing the phone so looks like its no longer available. Will post again if this falls through.

I also bought a cell phone at MBK a couple of years ago. I carry it with me everytime I go to BKK, but I also take it when I go to Europe a couple of times a year. I'm really glad I bought it. It's nothing fancy... no taking pictures or playing music... just a handy phone to send and receive calls! All I have to do is get the appropriate SIM card. I save my "old" BKK and FRA cards and if they have not expired, I can keep the same number the next time!

All my BKK, FRA, ZRH friends' numbers are programmed into the phone, so I can start calling when I hit the ground. DH has borrowed this handy phone a couple of times because it's much easier than his fancy-schmancy T Mobile tri-band, call-from-where-ever phone! I laugh because his fancy phone was very expensive!
