Well, there's the Le Royal (which was part of Raffles chain at one time, not sure if it still is). PP is mostly a place for smaller hotels. The Quay-side is the best area to stay. The Amanjaya is quite nice, as is the Quay (FCC's new place), the old FCC or Bouganvillier.

The only big chain hotel is the Intercon. but it's kind of out of the way.

does not have to be a chain... just needs to be in the middle of things and comfortable

I stayed in both the Amanjaya and Bouganvillier. The Amanjaya was nicer (but there is nothing at all wrong with Bouganvillier) However as you are "mature" can I point out that we were on the top floor of the Bouganvillier and the pull up the stairs in the heat was quite something. The Amanjaya has a lift and also the whole hotel is air conditioned whereas I seem to remember that the stairwell wasn't in the Bouganvillier

We absolutely loved The Quay. Yes it's quite trendy but no reason why a mature couple shouldn't appreciate it. Huge rooms (make sure you get one with a balcony), small dipping pool, nice bar area and right in the centre of things. We also went to Le Royal which looked pretty faded and the FCC (which looked OK but not nearly as nice as the Quay - and with more hassle outside). Amanjaya is on the same stretch and while we didn't go in, it certainly didn't look anything special from the outside.

second the motion for the Quay.

The Amanjaya is definitely under-stated. Doesn't look like much outside, but the rooms are huge inside, and very nicely decorated. The other nice thing is that, for an Aman hotel, it doesn't cost a fortune.

Good point about the stairs at the Bouganvillier. It is a bit of a hike up there. I would have thought with that big remodel they did last year, they would have put in a lift (maybe they did - when were you last there Frances?)

The Quay is definitely the newest, if that makes any difference. Any one of the three would be quite nice.

Is the Amanjaya in a good location (i am starting tentative planning for Cambodia in November!!)

Smeagol Jan 25th, 2010 05:36 AM

is Amanjaya an Aman resort? might be a daft question but the only one i can find on the actual Aman website is called Amasara?

Frances Jan 25th, 2010 01:18 PM

I seem to remember that the Amanjaya isn't actually an "Aman" hotel. Certainly the prices we paid were not as much as I would have expected had it been.
You are right MichaelBKK it was some 4 years ago that we were there and it may well have changed by now.
Tha Amanjaya is bang on the riverfront and I agree, very lovely inside. The Bougainvillier had the most wonderful silk hangings in the room and possibly the most efficient air conditioning ever- which I remember as I collapsed on the bed each time I climbed up to the top floor!

Since Andy hasn't chimed in on this thread, I feel compelled to point out that once should not confuse age with maturity. ;-)

filmwill Jan 25th, 2010 01:44 PM

ah, damn, Kathie, you beat me to the punch.

I was about to ask Bob if he was looking for a hotel for his parents.

MichaelBKK Jan 25th, 2010 06:25 PM

I thought I had checked this before, but apparently I didn't. The Amanjaya is not part of the Aman Resorts group.

All these places are right next to each other (the Quay is actually in between two bits of the Bouganviller) on the quay, which is where you want to be the first time in PP, IMO.

after babysitting a 4 year old (no not andy) for several days, i do in fact feel very old

we have decided not to go to cambodia on this trip... thanks for your thoughts.... why? air fare from HCMC to PP was about $300.... way tooooooooooooo high
