Penang-johor Bahru vs. Pen-SIN
We have found a flight that will give us full use of our last day in Penang that arrive in Johor Bahru (instead of to SIN at 13.35) with Air Asia.
Not only are they cheaper than the PEN-SIN Malaysia Air flights, the timing works o.k. for us. But, will it be terribly difficult to get a taxi from Johor Bahru to SIN at almost midnight? Or is crossing the border again going to be such a pain you would avoid it if possible? Will this be a negotiating process, or is there a more or less set fee for the transport through a voucher desk? (We are three adult passengers) Any comments? hoping to make this decision as soon as someone clues me in to the best option. thanks |
Crossing the border at the causeway into Spore at or after midnight should not be a big problem UNLESS you are doing this on a Sunday night or on a public holiday, at those times you could well have traffic with returning Singaporean holidaymakers. Otherwise, it should be OK.
You can take a bus into Singapore or a taxi. For information on buses, see the website for the JB airport is at http://www.senaiairport.com/, as I am not sure how late they run. There will be taxis at the airport, and you can pre-pay in the Arrivals Hall. Fares are set and are based on your final destination in Singapore. For taxi options see the website as well. I don’t believe you would have any problem finding a taxi at midnight. |
we took a bus several years ago from a hotel (novotel, i think) in sin. directly to the airport in JB, with a stop for customs, etc on the bridge (PIA)... cheap and easy...
you will love air asia...just make sure to buy express boarding for an extra $1 or 2...makes all the difference |
There is a new immigration and customs complex in Johor Baru which has just been opened. There is massive congestion at certain times especially from SIN to JB. Not sure if traffic the other way is impacted and at what times. http://travel.asiaone.com/Travel/New...17-108434.html Traffic cam if you're interested. http://www.onemotoring.com.sg/publis...woodlands.html |
thanks for the replies. is this airport ( assuming not much traffic) 20-30 minutes from singapore or more like an hour or more??
p.s. sunday night AND 4th january. have since found singapore air flights direct to SIN, also giving us a few extra hours in Penang, but at more than double the cost. but will probably do that.. sounds much easier. plus, our son's hotel is on sentosa island, (we are still looking into options) so seems changi would suit him best in this case since he is the one who has to get up early for work in the a.m. |
OK if you are going to Sentosa, then I would suggest that you take the SECOND LINK (Tuas) causeway, and not the Woodlands causeway, to cross over to Singapore. This should save you some time with immigration as it is generally a less-frequented bridge and immigration point. With no traffic from JB airport it should be about 30 minutes to this causeway. From there it is like another 20 minutes to Sentosa, but it is a straight shot pretty much down the Ayer Rajah Expressway. But all in, with no traffic, you are looking at about an hour door to door, if that makes a difference to you.
On that Sunday of a long holiday weekend, you may have traffic on the causeway even at midnight (but should be less at this Second Link immigration point), but you aren’t driving, so if the airfare savings really are that good, I don’t see the problem. You can always take a nap, etc if you are sitting in traffic. The taxi driver should know to take the Second Link, but going to Sentosa would probably mean that using the bus would be inconvenient, as they go over the Woodlands causeway as far as I know, and then you will have to take a taxi anyway from the bus drop off points. Based on the fact that you are going to Sentosa, I would take a taxi. |
ok. please do not bother yourselves anymore.
as usual, these plans are always shifting. seems now he needs to be back earlier, so we will trash the JB idea. You have been very helpful, and it seems my credit card has finally been successfully registerd for visa verification and i can actually start to buy these darn tickets! thanks for all your wise advice. much appreciated. |
