Peace Museum Hiroshima
It's a long time since I've been to Hiroshima, so my memories of it are a bit hazy, so I was looking for a bit of advice from people who have been more recently.
How long did it take to go through? I'm sure it's a bit of a case of 'as long as you want' but a ballpark time would be great I'm sure I read somewhere about a more child-friendly route through, that skips some of the more graphic stuff? But I can't seem to find any mention of it now. Is that the case? And just how child-friendly is it? (I'm sure I saw Japanese elementary school children in the museum when I was there) If you've been with children ( we'll have a 7 year old and a 3 year old) how did you prepare them? I'm sure the 3 year old will be oblivious but the 7 year old will be very curious ( she's spent a lot of time with us on the WW1 battlefields in France/Belgium so she's not totally ignorant of war/cemeteries etc) Thanks! |
it took us about 1 hour... the park itself is lovely and great for a kid

We'll be there in January, so the park might be a bit weather-dependent.
Is the museum totally a no-go for a (prepared) 7 year old? |
It is very well done, and not at all gruesome. If the child is well prepared, they will take away what they relate to. I would take them.

We had our eight year old with us in 2008. We had to leave after about 90 minutes to catch a train. He was very upset about leaving as he loved the museum.

ms_go and our teenage daughter pretty much had to drag me to Hiroshima and the Peace Museum... and I am so glad they did. What a great museum, and what a remarkable city!
Don't miss the lovely Peace Park: http://onelittleworld.zenfolio.com/p...925c#h26b206ab And if you have time for an inexpensive, hearty, fun lunch, find the "Okonomiyaki-mura". It's a multi-story building populated with different vendors offering the local specialty, okonomiyaki, which is sort of like an omelet or crepe: http://onelittleworld.zenfolio.com/p...925c#h213c7f41 |
Thanks everyone! We'll pencil in an hour or so and make sure DD is well prepared.
Mr_go, unfortunately Okonomiyaki may have to be off our menu this time around, unless we split up a bit. Youngest DD is allergic to egg, so taking her to somewhere she's surrounded by it may not be the cleverest idea. I may send DH and older DD there for the experience though, and find somewhere a bit safer for Little DD and myself. |
